How to Grow Nemesia from Seed in South Africa

Learn how to turn fine Nemesia seed into bright, compact pots, borders and edging for South Africa’s cooler months. The three GARDENING.co.za mixes need slightly different treatment: Carnival Mix and Sundrops Mix are raw Nemesia strumosa seed, while Poetry Mix is pelleted F1 seed with its own sowing and branching programme.

Quick Grow Facts

• Best season: Sow for cool establishment and spring or autumn flowering. Nemesia fades quickly in sustained heat.
• Position: Full sun in cool weather; morning sun and light afternoon shade where days become hot.
• Medium: Fine, clean, free-draining seedling mix kept evenly moist, never saturated.

Fine Seed, Cover and Light

Do not bury these small seeds 6 mm deep. The current Carnival and Sundrops packet images say 6 mm, but supplier and horticultural guidance for fine Nemesia seed ranges from no cover to only a very light cover. Poetry’s breeder programme requires cover, while the Sundrops programme says not to cover.

• Carnival: Press raw seed onto a level, damp surface and dust with only 1–2 mm of fine vermiculite. The exact supplier light response is not published, so keep the tray in bright ambient light rather than darkness.
• Poetry: Place pellets on the surface, wet them thoroughly and cover only with 1–2 mm of fine vermiculite. The breeder lists light as optional in the germination stage but warns that dark-grown seedlings can stretch.
• Sundrops: Press the raw seed onto the surface and leave it uncovered. Light has not been confirmed as a germination requirement, but bright ambient light makes moisture and emergence easier to monitor.

A cover is meant to hold humidity around the seed, not form a crust. Use bottom watering or a very fine mist so seed does not wash into deep pockets.

How to Sow Nemesia Seed

1. Fill clean cells or a shallow tray with fine seedling mix. Moisten it fully, then let surplus water drain.
2. Level the surface without compressing it. Fine seed disappears into cracks, so break up coarse pieces first.
3. Sow the named mix at the depth in the Quick Grow Facts table. Carnival and Sundrops raw seed can be mixed with a pinch of dry fine sand for more even distribution.
4. For Poetry, place one pellet per cell to conserve a small packet, or sow three to four pellets in a larger plug or final pot for the fuller commercial effect. One pellet produces one plant and one flower colour.
5. Keep Carnival around 15–18°C, Poetry around 18–21°C and Sundrops around 20–21°C until emergence. Do not use a hot propagator.
6. Keep the surface continuously moist but aerated. Wet Poetry pellets completely; never leave cells standing in water.
7. Give strong, cool light as soon as seedlings emerge. Remove any humidity cover and improve gentle airflow to prevent stretching and damping-off.

Direct sowing: Carnival and Sundrops can be scattered thinly in a prepared bed in mild, windless weather. Water the bed before sowing, press seed into the surface and protect it from driving rain, hot wind and ants. Tray sowing is safer where weather is variable or seed is limited.

Thinning, Transplanting and Hardening Off

Thin crowded raw-seed trays once seedlings can be handled, keeping the strongest plants. Transplant when several true leaves have formed and roots hold the plug together—often about four weeks after emergence under breeder conditions, but longer in a cool home setup. Lift by the leaves or root plug, not the delicate stem.

Harden seedlings for 5–7 days by gradually increasing outdoor light and airflow. Protect them from hard frost, heavy rain, desiccating wind and hot midday sun. Plant at the same depth as the plug, water in gently and use the wider spacing in humid gardens.

When to Sow Nemesia in South Africa

Winter-rainfall Western Cape

Sow from March to May for winter establishment and late-winter to spring flowers. A second protected sowing in August or September can flower before strong summer heat. Shelter trays from pounding rain, keep them bright and airy, and use free-draining beds. Afternoon shade helps plants last as spring warms.

Frost-prone interior

Sow under protection in July or August and transplant after the main risk of hard frost, aiming for spring bloom before early-summer heat. An early-autumn sowing is possible only where seedlings and flowering plants can be moved under cover or protected from freezing nights. Frost can damage buds and soft growth even though plants enjoy cool days.

Humid coast and KZN Midlands

Use autumn to early winter or late winter to early spring. Avoid the hottest, most humid summer months. Give morning sun, light afternoon shade, the wider spacing and early-day soil-level watering. In frost-prone Midlands gardens, keep late-winter trays protected until severe frosts pass.

Hot-dry or subtropical interior

Sow from March to May, or in a short late-winter window where frost is absent or protection is available. Establish plants before hot spring weather, use morning sun with light afternoon shade, mulch lightly after establishment and never let a pot bake dry. Flowering may pause or plants may finish when heat persists.

Carnival Mix: Compact Raw-Seed Colour

Carnival Mix is raw Nemesia strumosa seed for compact to semi-dwarf plants about 25 cm high. Its current product and supplier evidence support a broad mixed-colour, large-flowered display, but the packet does not state a fixed colour formula or ratio.

• Sow: Press onto moist mix, add only a 1–2 mm vermiculite dusting and keep at about 15–18°C.
• Germination: Allow about 7–14 days; cooler conditions may take longer.
• Spacing: Use 15 cm for dense seasonal edging or 20–25 cm where each plant should develop separately.
• Pinching: Optional. Pinch the tip once after three to four pairs of true leaves if seedlings are sparse or leggy; this delays first bloom. Skip pinching on naturally compact plants.
• Flowering: Plan roughly 14–16 weeks from sowing in ordinary garden conditions, then deadhead or lightly shear spent stems while cool weather continues.

Poetry Mix is pelleted F1 seed from the Poetry series. The accepted botanical name is Nemesia fruticans; older breeder literature prints N. foetans, and taxonomic references list N. foetens as a synonym. The series is naturally bushy and was selected to branch without pinching.

• Sow: Place pellets on the surface, wet them completely and cover with only 1–2 mm of fine vermiculite.
• Germination: The breeder benchmark is 4–5 days at 18–21°C. Allow 4–10 days in a home tray and keep seedlings in bright light.
• Grouping: Commercial culture uses four pellets per cell. With a 10-pellet home packet, sow one per cell and group three or four finished plants in a pot, or sow three to four pellets together where an immediate mixed clump matters more than conserving seed.
• Spacing: Use 25–30 cm in beds. Expect about 30–35 cm height and 25–30 cm spread under the matched breeder programme.
• Pinching: Do not pinch healthy Poetry plants. It already branches freely and pinching delays its compact flowering programme.

Sundrops Mix is raw Nemesia strumosa seed for an early, upright and compact display. The matched breeder lists plants about 25–30 cm high, while established supplier culture gives about 20–25 cm spread. The mix is multicoloured, but no colour ratio is guaranteed.

• Sow: Surface-sow, press gently and do not cover.
• Germination: The breeder benchmark is 3–5 days at 20–21°C. The current packet allows 7–14 days, which is a realistic home outer window.
• Grow cool: Move emerged seedlings into bright, cooler conditions. Commercial finishing is around 13–18°C; sustained warmth makes the crop stretch and shortens flowering.
• Spacing: Use 15 cm only for dense short-term bedding; 20–25 cm gives each compact plant room and better airflow.
• Pinching: Usually unnecessary for a well-grown compact crop. Pinch only a young, thin plant before buds form, knowing this can delay the early display.
• Flowering: Plan roughly 12–14 weeks to a finished pot under cool managed culture and allow longer outdoors when light or temperature is uneven.

Soil, Water, Feeding and Flowering Care

• Soil: Use fertile but free-draining soil or container mix, ideally slightly acidic to neutral. Add grit where pots remain wet.
• Water: Keep seedlings continuously moist. After establishment, water when the surface begins to dry, soaking the root zone and allowing surplus to drain.
• Feeding: Feed containers lightly after three to four weeks with a balanced flowering feed at label rate. Excess nitrogen produces soft, stretched growth and fewer flowers.
• Light: Full sun gives the best bloom in cool weather. Use morning sun and light afternoon shade once days become hot.
• Airflow: Give plants space, water the soil early in the day and remove dead stems. Wet, crowded growth is vulnerable to root rot and fungal spotting.

Why Nemesia Germination or Establishment Fails

• Nothing emerges: Seed was buried too deeply, the fine surface dried, a pellet was not fully wetted, the tray was waterlogged, or temperatures were outside the cool target range.
• Seedlings collapse at soil level: Damping-off follows stagnant air and wet mix. Use clean materials, drain the tray, remove covers after emergence and increase airflow.
• Seedlings stretch: Light was too weak, temperatures stayed too warm, or Poetry was germinated in darkness. Move seedlings into stronger cool light; do not bury stems deeply to hide stretch.
• Transplants stop growing: Fine roots were torn, plugs were planted too deep, roots stayed saturated, or young plants were moved directly into frost, wind or hot sun.
• Few flowers: Heat, shade, excess nitrogen, dry roots or overdue deadheading are common causes. Correct conditions rather than adding more fertiliser.
• Plants fade in summer: These mixes are cool-season performers. Cut back only if cooler weather is returning; otherwise replace them with a heat-tolerant seasonal plant.
• Sticky or distorted tips: Check for aphids. Wash off a light infestation, encourage beneficial insects and use only a remedy currently registered for ornamental plants, following its label.
• Roots or crowns rot: Improve drainage, widen spacing and stop evening overhead watering. Remove collapsed plants and do not reuse contaminated mix.
