Nemesia Sundrops Mix gives early, upright mixed colour on compact plants for cool-season pots, edging and borders. The raw Nemesia strumosa seed produces plants about 25–30 cm high and 20–25 cm wide under the matched supplier programme.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: Cool-season annual bedding plant
  • Scientific Name: Nemesia strumosa
  • Series: Sundrops Mix; multicoloured, with no fixed colour ratio guaranteed
  • Seed Form: Raw seed
  • Pack Size: 250 raw seed; live stock varies
  • South African Sowing Time: Autumn in mild districts; protected late winter where severe frost delays planting
  • Position: Full sun or partial shade; use morning sun and light afternoon shade as days warm
  • Sow Depth and Light: Surface-sow, press gently and do not cover; keep in bright ambient light
  • Germination: Breeder benchmark 3–5 days at 20–21°C; allow up to the packet’s 7–14-day outer window at home
  • Moisture: Keep the exposed seed continuously moist with bottom watering or a very fine mist
  • Pretreatment: None; do not soak, chill or scarify
  • Transplanting: Move a root-held plug with several true leaves; harden for 5–7 days
  • Spacing: 15 cm for a dense short-term display; 20–25 cm for full spread and better airflow
  • Growth Form: Upright and compact, about 25–30 cm high and 20–25 cm wide; no support needed
  • Pinching: Usually unnecessary; pinch only a young thin plant before buds form, knowing it can delay the early display
  • Flowering: Plan roughly 12–14 weeks to a finished pot under cool managed culture; home timing varies
  • Use and Safety: Ornamental only; treatment status is not confirmed, so do not eat the seed

Why Grow This Series

  • Early flowering adds colour alongside other cool-season bedding plants.
  • The upright compact form suits small pots, edging and grouped displays.
  • Mixed flower colours and patterns create variety from one sowing.
  • Surface sowing avoids burying the fine raw seed too deeply.

Garden Uses

Use Sundrops Mix in containers, edging, borders or compact mass planting. Each seedling produces its own colour or pattern, so the final mix varies and a small sowing may not show every catalogue colour.

Growing Notes

  • Do not follow the current online packet image’s 6 mm depth. The matched breeder programme says not to cover Sundrops seed.
  • Keep the exposed surface evenly moist without washing seed into cracks.
  • After emergence, move seedlings into bright, cooler conditions; commercial finishing is around 13–18°C.
  • Deadhead regularly and cut a tired plant back by about one-third only when cooler weather remains.
