| Splash Select Mix and White | Raw, very fine seed. Surface press and use only a fine 0–1 mm cover. Light is optional during the first breeder stage, but never bury the seed deeply. | 21–24°C. Controlled breeder germination can complete in 2–3 days; the current packet gives 7–10 days for ordinary conditions. | 30–40 cm apart; 35 cm is practical. Mounded and spreading, about 25–46 cm high in the garden and 30–36 cm wide; pot-grown plants can stay 10–15 cm high. |
- Botanical name: Hypoestes phyllostachya, a tropical subshrub commonly called polka dot plant.
- How it is grown: Usually as a frost-tender warm-season annual outdoors or as a short-lived perennial houseplant.
- Best method: Clean plug cells or a small seed tray give the most reliable moisture control. Outdoor direct sowing is risky because the seed is tiny.
- Position after transplanting: Bright filtered light, dappled shade or gentle morning sun. Protect plants from harsh afternoon sun and frost.
- Useful foliage display: Plan on roughly 10–12 weeks from sowing in warm, bright, well-managed conditions; cool weather and low light slow the result.
- Pinching: Confetti Compact is naturally low and normally needs no pinch. Pinch tall Splash Select shoots and remove small flower spikes only if you want bushier foliage.
How to Sow Fine Hypoestes Seed
- Wash the tray and tools, then fill cells with fresh, fine, free-draining seedling mix. Pre-moisten the whole cell and let excess water drain.
- Sow sparingly. The raw seed is extremely small, so tap it from a folded piece of paper or use a damp toothpick. Aim for one seed per cell where possible.
- Press the seed gently into contact with the surface. For Confetti Compact, dust with fine vermiculite. For Splash Select, apply only the thinnest fine cover. Keep every cover between 0 and 1 mm.
- Mist gently or water from below until the surface is evenly moist. Cover with a clear lid only long enough to stabilise moisture; do not leave the cell standing in water.
- Hold Confetti Compact near 20°C and Splash Select at 21–24°C. Keep the surface continuously moist but porous enough to contain air.
- As soon as the first seedlings appear, move the tray into bright filtered light, vent the cover and provide gentle airflow. Keep the mix moist, not glossy or saturated.
- After the first true leaves expand, allow the surface to approach slightly dry between light waterings while the root zone remains moist.
Direct sow or trays? Plug cells are safest for all three products. Sakata also allows five to seven Confetti Compact seeds to be sown directly into a 10 cm pot, which produces a full mixed pot but makes colour balance and thinning less predictable. Do not direct sow these seeds into coarse outdoor soil where rain, wind or one dry afternoon can remove the fine seed.
Keep Moisture Continuous but Aerated
Hypoestes seed must not dry during germination, yet saturated mix and stale humidity invite damping-off. Use fresh soilless seedling mix, clean cells and water that can drain freely. Bottom-water briefly or mist lightly, then empty standing water. Vent the cover at first emergence and space seedlings so air can move around them.
A seedling pinched or water-soaked at soil level is unlikely to recover. Remove affected seedlings and their surrounding mix, reduce surface wetness and clean any reused equipment before sowing again. Avoid strong fertiliser on unrooted seedlings; start a weak balanced feed only after true leaves and active roots are present.
Transplanting, Hardening and Spacing
Transplant at about four to five weeks, once each seedling has two or three pairs of true leaves and the roots hold the plug together. Water first, lift by the plug or a leaf rather than the stem, and plant at the same level. Do not bury the crown.
Harden plants over 5–7 days by increasing light and outdoor air gradually. Start in bright shade, then add gentle morning sun. Protect them from temperatures below 12°C, hot dry wind, harsh midday sun and driving rain while they adjust.
- Confetti Compact Mix: about 15 cm apart in a bed, basket or mixed container.
- Splash Select Mix and White: 30–40 cm apart outdoors; the 35 cm packet spacing sits within the breeder's 30–41 cm range.
- Containers: one Confetti plant or a small multi-sown group suits a 10 cm pot. Splash Select can be grouped as several plugs in a 10–12 cm production-style pot, or grown as one plant in a larger home container.
When and Where to Grow Hypoestes in South Africa
Winter-rainfall Western Cape
Sow under cover from late winter into spring, once a warm 20–24°C tray can be maintained, for colour through spring and summer. Use bright morning light or dappled shade and irrigate steadily through the dry season. Shelter pots from strong southeasters and hot afternoon sun. Move valued plants indoors before cold, wet winter weather; saturated cool roots and nights below 12°C cause rapid decline.
Frost-prone interior
Start indoors from late winter and plant outside only after frost has passed and nights are reliably above 12°C. Treat outdoor plants as warm-season annuals, or keep favourite pots in a bright frost-free room before winter. Dry winter air can brown leaf edges, but do not solve low humidity by leaving pots in water.
Humid coast and KZN Midlands
Sow in spring or early autumn when warmth is reliable but extreme heat and prolonged wet spells can be avoided. Use bright shade, wider spacing and early-day watering so foliage dries before night. Vent propagation covers promptly and keep pots off saturated ground. In colder Midlands pockets, bring containers under frost-free cover during winter.
Hot-dry or subtropical interior
Sow from late winter into spring, or in early autumn for a protected display. Give morning sun with afternoon shade, keep containers away from heat-reflecting walls and protect them from drying wind. Check small pots often and water thoroughly when the surface begins to dry, then drain. A pebble humidity tray may help indoors, but the pot base must sit above the water.
Hypoestes Confetti Compact Mix: Low, Mounded Colour
Hypoestes Confetti Compact Mix Seeds is Sakata Confetti Compact Mix, a raw-seed H. phyllostachya selection bred for dense branching and a low mound. The mix combines pink, red, rose, white and related spotted foliage; each seedling develops its own leaf colour.
Surface press the seed, dust with fine vermiculite, keep at about 20°C and expect germination in roughly 7–10 days. Transplant at four to five weeks and space about 15 cm apart. Plants normally finish around 10–15 cm high and wide, with some home-grown plants approaching 20 cm. They suit low pots, terrariums with ventilation, baskets and the front of a warm shaded border.
Confetti Compact is naturally compact and is suited to growing without pinching. If low indoor light makes an older plant stretch, pinch only the soft shoot tips and remove flower spikes to restore a leafy mound.
Hypoestes Splash Select Mix: Bold Mixed Foliage
Hypoestes Splash Select Mix Seeds is a raw-seed mixed selection from PanAmerican Seed's Splash Select series. Expect bold spotted leaf colours, but the current packet does not state fixed colour percentages, so individual trays may not contain every shade in equal numbers.
Press the seed onto the moist surface, apply only a fine 0–1 mm cover and hold it at 21–24°C. Controlled breeder conditions can complete germination in 2–3 days; the packet's 7–10-day window is more realistic for an ordinary home tray. Transplant at four to five weeks and space 30–40 cm apart.
In a garden, Splash Select forms a mounded, spreading plant about 25–46 cm high and 30–36 cm wide. Pot-grown plants can remain nearer 10–15 cm high. Use it for bold indoor foliage, shaded patio pots and warm partial-shade borders.
Hypoestes Splash Select White: Crisp White-Spotted Foliage
Hypoestes Splash Select White Seeds is the raw-seed Splash Select White selection, recognised by large white markings on deep green leaves. It shares the Splash Select germination, spacing and mature growth form.
Surface press, cover no deeper than 1 mm and keep at 21–24°C. Allow 2–3 days under tightly controlled breeder conditions or the packet's 7–10 days in an ordinary home setup. Transplant at four to five weeks, use 30–40 cm outdoor spacing and protect the white foliage from strong afternoon sun, which can scorch or wash out the contrast.
Use White as a cool visual contrast in bright indoor pots, mixed containers or partial-shade borders. Insufficient light produces soft, greener growth; bright filtered light keeps the markings clearer.
Ongoing Care for Strong Leaf Colour
- Light: Provide bright indirect light, dappled shade or gentle morning sun. Low light causes lank growth and greener leaves; strong direct sun can fade, curl or scorch foliage.
- Water: Keep the root ball evenly moist, then let the surface dry slightly before watering again. Do not allow repeated wilting or permanent saturation.
- Soil: Use a moisture-retentive but free-draining potting mix. A mildly acidic mix around pH 5.5–6.0 matches breeder culture.
- Feeding: Once rooted, apply a weak balanced liquid feed every two to three weeks during active growth. Excess nitrogen produces soft, stretched shoots.
- Humidity and airflow: Moderate humidity prevents brown edges, but moving air and dry foliage overnight reduce disease. Avoid sealed, stagnant conditions.
- Pinching and flowers: Pinch tall shoots just above a leaf pair and remove small flower spikes if foliage is the goal. Confetti Compact usually needs little or no pinching.
- Indoor use: Choose a bright room away from heaters and cold draughts. Rotate the pot for even growth.
- Outdoor use: Grow in frost-free bright shade or partial sun. Bring containers inside before cold nights.
Why Hypoestes Germination or Establishment Fails
- No seedlings: the seed was buried under the packet's incorrect 3 cm depth, the surface dried, the tray was too cold or the seed lost viability.
- Patchy emergence: tiny raw seed was sown in clumps, the fine cover was uneven or one side of the tray dried faster.
- Seedlings collapse at soil level: damping-off was encouraged by dirty equipment, waterlogged mix, crowding or a closed humidity cover left on after emergence.
- Seedlings stretch: post-emergence light is too weak or the covered tray stayed warm and dark too long.
- Plants stall after transplanting: roots were torn, the crown was buried, plants were moved without hardening or temperatures fell below about 12°C.
- Leaves turn green: light is insufficient. Increase bright filtered light gradually without moving straight into harsh sun.
- Leaves curl, bleach or scorch: direct sun, hot dry wind or a sudden light change is too strong.
- Brown leaf edges: the root ball dried repeatedly, indoor air is very dry or fertiliser salts accumulated.
- Yellow leaves and drop: roots are saturated, light is poor or the plant is chilled.
- Growth becomes tall and flowers: pinch soft shoot tips, remove flower spikes and improve bright filtered light.
Pests, Disease and Safe Use
Watch for aphids, whitefly, mealybugs, thrips and spider mites, especially on indoor or protected plants. Start with isolation, a firm water rinse where practical, clean growing areas and improved airflow. Use only a control registered for the pest and situation, exactly as labelled.
Hypoestes phyllostachya is listed by the ASPCA as non-toxic to dogs, cats and horses, although chewing may still cause mild vomiting or diarrhoea. It is an ornamental, not a food crop: do not eat the plant or seed, and keep seed packets away from children and pets. “Raw seed” describes the sale form and does not prove that a particular lot is untreated; follow any treatment warning on the packet you receive.
