Quick Grow Facts
-
Plant Type: Frost-tender tropical subshrub, usually grown as a warm-season annual outdoors or a short-lived houseplant.
-
Scientific Name: Hypoestes phyllostachya; PanAmerican Seed Splash Select White.
-
Seed Form: Current live variants are raw seed. Sow as supplied and follow any lot-specific treatment warning on the packet you receive.
-
Best Sowing Window: Start under warm protection from late winter into spring, or use the guide's regional window.
-
Position: Bright filtered light, dappled shade or gentle morning sun; protect from harsh afternoon sun and frost.
-
Sow Depth and Light: Surface press and apply only a fine 0–1 mm cover. Do not follow the current packet label's incorrect 3 cm depth. Light is optional during the first breeder stage.
-
Germination Temperature: 21–24°C.
-
Germination: Controlled breeder conditions can complete in 2–3 days; the current packet gives a practical 7–10-day home window.
-
Method: Clean plug cells are recommended because the raw seed is very fine.
-
Transplanting: About four to five weeks, when two or three pairs of true leaves and a holding root plug have formed.
-
Spacing: 30–40 cm; 35 cm is a practical target.
-
Growth Form: Mounded and spreading; about 25–46 cm high in the garden and 30–36 cm wide. Pot-grown plants can stay 10–15 cm high.
-
Foliage Display: Plan about 10–12 weeks from sowing in warm, bright conditions.
Why Grow This Selection
- Large white markings contrast strongly with deep green leaves.
- The mounded, spreading plant fills a pot or partial-shade border.
- Bright filtered light maintains clearer white patterning without harsh-sun scorch.
- The foliage provides colour indoors or outdoors without waiting for showy flowers.
Garden and Indoor Uses
Use Splash Select White as a light visual accent in a mixed container, a bright indoor foliage pot or a partial-shade border. Give mature plants room to spread and protect the white leaves from direct hot-afternoon sun.
Growing Notes
- Use clean, fine, free-draining seedling mix and keep the surface continuously moist but aerated until emergence.
- Vent the humidity cover at first emergence, then provide bright filtered light and gentle airflow.
- Keep established plants evenly moist, allow the surface to dry slightly between waterings and feed lightly during active growth.
- Pinch tall shoots just above a leaf pair and remove flower spikes if you want denser foliage.
Safety: The ASPCA lists polka dot plant as non-toxic to dogs, cats and horses, but chewing may still cause mild stomach upset. This is an ornamental, not a food crop; do not eat the plant or seed.
