How to Grow Radishes in South Africa
Radishes reward accurate sowing and prompt harvest. This South African guide covers four exact raw-seed products sold by Gardening.co.za: Cherry Belle and Sparkler for fast globe roots, plus China Rose and Japanese Red Daikon Sango for microgreens. These are different outcomes, so use the named section for the packet you bought.

Cherry Belle: red globe radish
Cherry Belle is Raphanus sativus grown for a compact, crisp, cherry-red globe root. The current packet states raw seed, 3 mm depth, 10 × 10 cm spacing, 3–10-day germination and a 20–35-day harvest window. Direct sow where the root will mature, keep growth uninterrupted and begin checking exposed shoulders early rather than waiting for every plant to reach the last packet day.
Sparkler: scarlet-and-white globe radish
Sparkler is Raphanus sativus grown for a scarlet globe with a distinct white tip. Its packet gives the same raw-seed, 3 mm, 10 × 10 cm, 3–10-day and 20–35-day directions as Cherry Belle. The live product page currently shows “Sun” as sow depth; that is a field error, not a sowing instruction. Harvest young while the root is crisp and the colour boundary is clear.
China Rose: pink-stemmed microgreens
The stocked China Rose packet is a raw-seed microgreen product, not a mature autumn-root instruction. Sow 1–2 mm deep, about 1 cm apart, and expect emergence in roughly 4–6 days with a 10–15-day packet harvest. The current live page's 15 mm depth and 30 cm spacing contradict the packet and must not be used for this crop.
Japanese Red Daikon Sango: burgundy-stemmed microgreens
Japanese Red Daikon Sango is stocked as a raw-seed microgreen crop. The current packet specifies 1–2 mm depth, about 1 cm spacing, 4–6-day germination and harvest at 10–15 days. Its name describes its radish lineage and colour selection; it does not make this packet a mature elongated-daikon-root product. This guide therefore covers cut microgreens only.
When to Sow Radishes in South Africa
Globe radishes are cool-season crops. The windows below are practical regional starting points, not fixed calendar guarantees: local altitude, frost, wind and a hot spell can move them. Microgreens can be sown year-round only when the tray stays near the target temperature with strong post-emergence light and good airflow.
Winter-rainfall Western Cape
Sow Cherry Belle and Sparkler in succession from late summer through winter and into spring, roughly February to September in many lowland gardens. Pause when soil is hot enough to drive rapid bolting or pithiness. In persistent winter rain, use a raised, freely drained bed and prevent surface crusting. For microgreens, protect trays from driving rain and stagnant indoor humidity; a bright, airy rain-sheltered position is safer than a sealed warm room.
Frost-prone interior
Useful globe-root windows are late summer to autumn and late winter to early spring, often February to May and August to September. Radish tolerates cool weather and light frost, but hard frost can damage seedlings and exposed shoulders; use frost cloth without pressing it onto the leaves. Stop before severe summer heat. Grow microgreens in a bright protected area where night cold does not stall trays and midday sun cannot overheat them.
Humid coast and KZN Midlands
Prefer the cooler, less humid months, commonly March to August, with good airflow and morning sun. Warm, wet, crowded foliage increases damping-off, leaf-spot and bacterial-disease risk, while heat reduces root quality. Space and thin globe radishes promptly, water the soil early, and avoid wet leaves overnight. Microgreen trays need free drainage, bottom watering where practical and immediate removal of any sour-smelling, slimy or mouldy batch.
Hot-dry or subtropical interior
Make the main globe-root sowings from autumn into winter, roughly March to July or August according to frost and altitude. Use succession sowings rather than one large planting. Keep the shallow seed zone evenly moist and use light temporary afternoon protection only during establishment; deep shade causes weak tops and poor roots. Move microgreen trays away from hot glass or metal surfaces and keep them near 18–22°C with airflow.
How to Direct-Sow and Thin Globe Radishes
- Choose full sun in cool weather and loose, stone-free, well-drained soil. Break clods and loosen at least 15 cm deep so the swollen root can expand evenly.
- Do not add fresh manure. Mix in mature compost before sowing if the soil needs organic matter; excessive fresh nitrogen encourages leafy growth, branching and food-safety risk.
- Draw a shallow drill and sow Cherry Belle or Sparkler 3 mm deep. No soaking, chilling, scarifying or other pretreatment is required by the current packets.
- Sow thinly and keep the seed zone evenly moist without waterlogging. Aim for soil around 15–24°C and expect emergence in the packet's 3–10-day range.
- Thin promptly. For a square grid, retain the packet's 10 × 10 cm spacing. For an intensive row, thin in stages to about 3–5 cm between globe roots only where shoulders remain uncrowded; eat sound thinnings as young leaves after washing.
- Do not transplant the retained root crop. Root disturbance can fork or misshape the swollen root. If container-growing, sow directly into the final container with at least 15 cm depth and unobstructed drainage.
- Repeat a short row every 7–14 days during suitable cool weather for a steady harvest.
How to Sow China Rose and Red Sango Microgreens
- Use only a received packet that remains labelled for microgreens and has no contradictory treatment warning. “Raw” describes the seed form; it does not by itself prove untreated food status.
- Wash hands. Clean and sanitise food-contact trays, drainage trays, scissors and the work surface. Use a clean food-suitable growing medium without raw manure and potable water.
- Pre-moisten the medium, let surplus drain, and sow about 1 cm apart. Cover the seed by only 1–2 mm. The current packet does not require soaking; skipping a soak avoids an extra warm-water food-hygiene step.
- Keep the tray evenly moist, never stagnant or waterlogged, at roughly 18–22°C. No special light trigger is required while the covered seed germinates.
- Give bright light and airflow immediately after emergence. Bottom-water where practical so edible stems and leaves stay drier.
- Do not transplant or thin into another crop. Harvest the whole clean stand at 10–15 days by cutting above the medium with sanitised scissors.
Ongoing Care for Globe Roots
Keep soil moisture even. Drought slows growth and increases heat and toughness; heavy watering after a dry spell can split roots. Mulch lightly after emergence without burying the shoulders. Radishes usually need little feeding in reasonably fertile soil. Avoid a strong nitrogen feed, which produces large tops at the expense of round roots.
Weed by hand while weeds are small because hoe damage close to the row can injure roots. Rotate away from cabbage, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, turnip and other brassicas. Harvest promptly as soon as roots reach useful size; a rapid crop left in warm soil can become pithy, hollow, fibrous, excessively hot or send up a flower stalk.
Flea Beetles and Humid-Region Risks
Flea beetles make many small round “shot holes” in young leaves. Their feeding is often cosmetic on a fast established crop but can check small seedlings. Use fine insect mesh immediately after sowing, seal the edges, control brassica weeds and rotate the bed. Inspect before using any pesticide; use only a product registered for radish or the exact edible crop in South Africa and observe its withholding period.
Root maggots and wireworms tunnel roots. Slugs and snails can remove seedlings. In warm, humid or wet conditions, damping-off, Alternaria-type leaf spots, black rot and other bacterial or fungal problems spread more readily through crowded wet foliage. Start in clean soil, thin early, water at root level in the morning, remove severely affected plants and avoid composting diseased brassica material. Repeated clubroot-like swelling or collapse calls for local diagnosis, drainage correction and a long brassica rotation.
Harvest and Food Hygiene
Check globe radishes from about day 20. Pull when the shoulder is the expected globe size and texture is still crisp; the packet's 20–35 days is a planning range, not a reason to delay a ready root. Remove tops, discard cracked, slimy or pest-tunnelled roots, wash soil off under clean running water and refrigerate promptly.
For microgreens, keep pets, pests, dirty tools and compost splash away from the tray. Do not handle food crops while ill. Cut only a clean, fresh-smelling stand above the medium with sanitised scissors and place it in a clean container. Wash under potable running water immediately before eating, drain well and keep cold. Washing does not rescue a mouldy, slimy or contaminated crop; discard the whole affected tray.
Troubleshooting Failed Germination, Roots and Microgreens
- No emergence: the shallow seed zone dried, crusted after heavy rain, became waterlogged, was buried too deeply or the seed was old. Re-sow at the exact packet depth in a fine, evenly moist surface.
- Only leaves, no globe: seedlings were not thinned, soil is compacted or stony, nitrogen is excessive, roots were transplanted, light is weak or weather is too hot.
- Forked or misshapen roots: stones, fresh manure, hard clods or root disturbance blocked straight expansion.
- Pithy, hollow or woody roots: heat, drought, slow growth or delayed harvest is likely. Sow in a cooler window, water evenly and pull earlier.
- Bolting: prolonged heat, crowding, drought or delayed harvest triggered a flower stalk. A bolted root will not return to crisp quality.
- Cracked roots: sudden water uptake after drought or harvesting too late is common. Keep moisture steady and harvest promptly.
- Tiny holes in leaves: inspect for flea beetles. Protect the next sowing with fine mesh from emergence.
- Microgreens fall over at the base: saturated medium, contaminated trays, high temperature and stale air favour damping-off. Discard the affected food crop, sanitise equipment and restart with better drainage and airflow.
- Microgreen stems stretch and pale: light arrived too late or is too weak. Move the next tray into bright light as soon as seedlings emerge.
- White fuzz: fine root hairs appear evenly near healthy roots and disappear when wet; mould often spreads over seed coats or medium and smells stale. If uncertain, discard the tray rather than taste it.
