Japanese Red Daikon Sango is stocked as a burgundy-stemmed radish microgreen crop, with green to purple-toned cotyledons and a peppery flavour. Its packet does not support a mature elongated-daikon-root outcome.

Grow it successfully: Read the Red Daikon Sango Microgreen Grow Guide.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: Annual radish grown as microgreens
  • Scientific Name: Raphanus sativus
  • Cultivar: Japanese Red Daikon Sango
  • Seed Form: Raw seed packet-labelled for microgreens; inspect the whole received packet for any lot-specific treatment warning
  • Crop Outcome: Burgundy-red stems with green to purple-toned cotyledons, cut as microgreens; not a mature elongated daikon root
  • General Sowing Time: Year-round only where a clean tray can be kept near 18–22°C with bright post-emergence light and airflow
  • Position: Bright light after emergence; protect indoor trays from hot glass and stagnant humidity
  • Sow Depth: 1–2 mm, according to the current packet
  • Light for Germination: No special light trigger while lightly covered; provide bright light immediately after emergence
  • Germination Temperature: About 18–22°C is a practical tray target
  • Pretreatment: None; the current packet does not require soaking
  • Germination: 4–6 days, according to the current packet
  • Method: Direct sow into a clean drained microgreen tray; do not transplant
  • Spacing: About 1 cm between seeds, according to the current packet
  • Growth Form: Dense upright seedlings harvested above the medium
  • Harvest: 10–15 days from sowing, according to the current packet

Why Grow This Variety

  • Burgundy-red stems and green to purple-toned cotyledons add colour and peppery flavour.
  • The packet's 4–6-day germination and 10–15-day harvest suit a rapid tray crop.
  • A small clean tray fits a bright kitchen or sheltered growing area.
  • This stocked outcome is cut microgreens, avoiding an unsupported mature-daikon-root promise.

Garden Uses

Use the cut peppery microgreens in salads, sandwiches or as a colourful garnish after hygienic growing, harvest and washing. This packet is not routed to a mature daikon-root crop.

Growing Notes

  • Use only a received packet that remains labelled for microgreens and has no contradictory treatment warning.
  • Sow 1–2 mm deep, about 1 cm apart, in a clean drained tray; do not transplant and do not grow this packet as a promised mature daikon root.
  • Keep near 18–22°C with even moisture, then give bright light and airflow immediately after emergence.
  • Bottom-water where practical and harvest above the medium at 10–15 days with sanitised scissors.
  • Discard any sour-smelling, slimy or mouldy tray; washing cannot make a contaminated crop safe.

Microgreen food hygiene: Wash hands and clean and sanitise food-contact trays, drainage trays, scissors and the work surface. Use potable water and a clean food-suitable medium without raw manure. Cut above the medium, wash under potable running water immediately before eating and keep cold. Discard any mouldy, slimy or sour-smelling tray.
