When To Sow In South Africa

Western Cape

Sow Resort Mix from late summer into autumn so plants develop through the cool season. Protect containers from prolonged winter waterlogging and move them away from hot spring sun as temperatures rise. New Look can be started in autumn in mild districts or from late winter into spring. Once established, its silver foliage tolerates brighter and drier positions than Resort Mix.

Highveld And Frost-Prone Interior

Use protected trays for both crops. Resort Mix needs shelter from frost and hot, drying air; grow it as a cool-season container crop where temperature and position can be adjusted. Start New Look from late winter and plant out after severe frost risk has eased. Harden seedlings gradually before exposing them to full sun or wind.

KwaZulu-Natal Coast And Humid Districts

Resort Mix performs best during the coolest part of the year in bright, airy shade. Heat, humidity and constantly wet foliage shorten the display. New Look is more tolerant of warmth once established, but still needs free-draining soil and airflow. Avoid dense planting and water at soil level where practical.

Treat Resort Mix as a short cool-season container project and avoid sowing into rising heat. Give it bright shade and excellent airflow. Use protected propagation because fine seed and young seedlings dry rapidly in wind. Resort Mix is best kept in containers where moisture and shade can be controlled. New Look can move into a sunnier bed once established, but should not be allowed to swing repeatedly between drought and waterlogging during early growth.

How To Sow Cineraria Seed

Use clean trays and a fine, free-draining seedling mix. Label every tray with the exact product name, because New Look and Resort Mix should not be managed as interchangeable seedlings.

Grow Resort Mix in bright filtered light or morning sun, with protection from harsh afternoon heat. Keep the potting mix evenly moist but never stagnant. Containers must drain freely, especially in cool wet weather.

Good airflow helps reduce problems associated with damp foliage. Remove faded blooms and damaged leaves to keep the display tidy. Resort Mix naturally declines as conditions become hot, so plan it as a winter and spring feature rather than a permanent summer bedding plant.
