Helichrysum Bracteatum Silvery White Seed produces crisp, papery white strawflower blooms for fresh cutting, dried arrangements and sunny garden displays. It is a useful neutral colour for South African gardeners building an everlasting-flower palette.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: Annual
  • Scientific Name: Xerochrysum bracteatum (syn. Helichrysum bracteatum)
  • General Sowing Time: Spring to early summer once frost risk has passed; start in trays 4-6 weeks before planting out.
  • Position: Full sun.
  • Sow Depth: Surface sow; do not cover seed as light is required for germination.
  • Spacing: 25-30 cm apart.
  • Germination: 7-10 days in warm conditions.
  • Height: Around 90-100 cm for taller cut-flower types; support may be useful.
  • Available Pack Sizes: 100 raw seed, 1000 raw seed

Why Grow This Variety

  • White blooms brighten mixed strawflower bunches and dried arrangements.
  • Excellent everlasting texture with long-lasting papery bracts.
  • Works well as a fresh cut flower and dried flower.
  • Useful neutral colour for bouquets, borders and cottage-garden planting.

Garden Uses

Use Helichrysum Silvery White as a clean highlight in cut-flower rows, dried-flower collections and mixed sunny borders. It combines well with rose, sulphur, apricot, orange and red tones where a white flower helps lift the whole palette.

Growing Notes

  • Start in trays and transplant carefully once seedlings are strong and weather is warm.
  • Bottom water or mist gently so the uncovered seed is not buried.
  • Use well-drained soil and avoid overly wet conditions.
  • Pinch young plants if you want more branching and higher stem production.
