How to Grow Impatiens from Seed in South Africa

Gardening.co.za sells two distinct seed-grown impatiens groups. Solarscape is raw-seeded interspecific Impatiens hybrida for sun or partial sun with reliable water. Beacon is coated I. walleriana for partial shade or shade and has high resistance to prevalent impatiens downy mildew. Both are frost tender, but their light, spacing and seed handling differ.

Tray sowing, pretreatment and transplanting

Start both series in cells or trays rather than direct sowing. Neither needs chilling, scarification or pre-soaking. For Beacon, wet the coating only after the seed is on the sowing surface. Keep seedlings in bright, protected conditions until each root ball holds together; PanAmerican's production schedules allow about 4–5 plug weeks for Beacon and 4–6 weeks for Solarscape. Home-grown plugs may take longer. Pot on or transplant without burying the stem, then harden gradually before planting outdoors after frost.

Solarscape

Press one raw seed onto moist fine mix and apply a light cover. Aim for 22–25 C; controlled germination is commonly 4–5 days, though home conditions can take longer. Light supports germination.

Standard Solarscape has a branching, mounded growth form and reaches about 23–28 cm high and 38–51 cm wide. XL Pink Jewel reaches about 28–33 cm high and 46–51 cm wide. Space both 30–36 cm apart. Acclimatise plants gradually to direct sun and keep roots evenly moist. Sun tolerance is not drought tolerance.

Beacon

Beacon Bright Red, Coral, Lipstick, Pearl Island Mix, Mix, Violet Shades and White are all sold as coated seed. Place one coated seed on the moist surface and do not cover it. Water gently until the coating is fully wet. Keep 20–25 C with light and high, even moisture; do not waterlog. Germination normally occurs in 3–6 days under suitable conditions, with White sometimes slightly slower.

Beacon has a mounded to upright growth form. Space plants 20–25 cm apart in partial shade or bright shade. Closer spacing makes plants taller. Expect about 36–46 cm high and 30–36 cm wide.

Beacon has high resistance to currently known and widely prevalent populations of Plasmopara destructor, the cause of impatiens downy mildew. High resistance reduces risk but does not mean immunity; spacing, airflow and clean growing conditions still matter.

Regional South African timing

Winter-rainfall Western Cape: start warm as winter eases. Protect from cold wet spells and wind. Give Solarscape stronger light and Beacon morning sun or bright shade; maintain water through dry summer.
Frost-prone interior: sow under warm protection in late winter or spring and plant out after frost.
Humid coast and KZN Midlands: provide drainage and airflow, water at soil level and inspect for stem/root disease. Give Beacon shade and Solarscape morning sun or partial sun.
Hot-dry or subtropical interior: establish before peak heat. Solarscape tolerates stronger light only with consistent water; Beacon needs afternoon shade.

Care, flowers and troubleshooting

Use fertile free-draining soil or quality container mix. Water deeply and let surplus drain. Feed lightly after establishment. No support is normally required. Grow these impatiens for a season-long flower display rather than harvest. Flowers are self-cleaning; pinch only if plants become leggy.

Do not eat coated seed or any seed carrying a packet treatment warning. Keep seed and coatings away from children and pets, wash hands after sowing, and follow the packet. This guide makes no edible-flower claim.

Cold trays, deep sowing, a dry coating and saturation cause poor emergence. After establishment, watch for sun scorch, drought wilt, low flowering in deep shade, thrips, aphids and mites. Remove suspected downy-mildew plants and do not compost them; use only locally labelled controls.
