Solarscape impatiens bring the lush colour of Busy Lizzies into brighter South African beds and containers. Unlike traditional shade-only impatiens, these seed-grown interspecific hybrids can perform in sun or partial shade when their roots have reliable moisture and the plants are established gradually.

Winter-rainfall regions

In the Western Cape, start seed in protected warmth as winter begins to ease. Plant into pots or beds once the soil is warming. Shelter young plants from cold wet spells and strong Cape wind, then maintain regular moisture through dry spring and summer weather.

Warm coastal and subtropical regions

Along the KwaZulu-Natal coast and warmer Eastern Cape districts, warmth is helpful but humidity raises disease pressure. Use airy spacing, free-draining mix and soil-level watering. Solarscape can take good light, but plants should be introduced to direct sun gradually rather than moved straight from a sheltered tray.

In the Lowveld, Limpopo and Northern Cape, establish plants before peak summer heat. Morning sun, afternoon protection, mulch and larger containers help keep roots cooler. Full-sun performance still depends on reliable water; a dry root ball and hot wind can scorch plants quickly.

How To Germinate Solarscape Impatiens Seed

Fill clean cells or trays with a fine, sterile and free-draining seedling mix.
Press one seed onto the moist surface and apply only a very light covering. Do not bury it deeply.
Keep the medium evenly moist and warm at about 22-25 C. High humidity helps at first, but the tray must not remain stagnant.
After germination begins, reduce excess surface moisture and provide bright filtered light plus gentle airflow.
Pot seedlings on before roots become congested, then harden them off over several days before outdoor planting.

Fine impatiens seed is easily displaced by heavy watering. Use a fine mist, a gentle rose or bottom watering, and label trays so a slower batch is not discarded too soon. Follow any lot-specific instructions on the packet.

Feed established container plants lightly and regularly at the labelled rate; excessive feeding can produce soft growth.
