How to Grow Trachelium from Seed in South Africa

Both colours are supplied as pelleted seed and share the same cut-flower method. How to Sow Pelleted Trachelium Seed
- Fill clean 288-cell or similar small-cell trays with a fine, disease-free, free-draining seedling mix. A lightly fed medium around pH 6.0 is suitable.
- Pre-moisten the mix and let excess water drain. High salts, especially high ammonium, can damage Trachelium during germination, so do not add strong fertiliser to the sowing mix.
- Place one intact pellet on the surface of each cell. Press very lightly for contact, but do not bury or cover it.
- Wet every pellet thoroughly with a fine mist. Keep the surface continuously moist enough for the coating to soften and split, but do not leave the cells standing in water.
- Hold the tray at 17–21°C. Light is optional during germination, but leave the pellet exposed and provide bright light as soon as seedlings appear.
- Breeder-controlled germination takes about 5–7 days. Keep a sound tray stable through the current packet's 15–21-day window before judging failure.
- After emergence, ventilate, provide bright light and gentle airflow, and reduce constant surface wetness while keeping the young root zone evenly moist.
Tray sowing or direct sowing?
Tray sowing is strongly preferred. The pellets are valuable, naturally tiny seed sits at the surface, and a tray makes temperature, salts, moisture and early disease easier to control. Direct sowing is possible only in a fine, weed-free, settled seedbed during mild weather: place pellets individually on the surface, do not cover them, protect them from heavy rain and wind, and keep the top layer from drying. Expect less even establishment than from plugs.
Transplanting and Hardening
Allow about 7–9 weeks for the plug crop. Transplant when seedlings have several true leaves and the roots hold each plug together, before roots circle tightly. Handle the plug rather than the stem and plant with the crown at soil level.
Harden plants for 7–10 days by gradually increasing outdoor light and air movement. Protect them from frost, cold saturated soil and severe afternoon heat during this change. Water the tray before planting and water the new row in gently.
Spacing, Pinching and Support
For a home border or a small picking garden, use the packet's 25 cm spacing. For a supported intensive cut row, choose one production system rather than blending densities:
- Unpinched: about 65 plants/m². This is the current breeder density for a central-stem crop.
- Pinched: about 24 plants/m². Pinch 2–3 weeks after planting, leaving two or three pairs of leaves. The wider density gives new side shoots room and the crop will finish later.
Install support netting before stems lean or tangle. A second level can be added as the crop extends. Pinching is optional: use it only when more branching and a longer schedule are wanted. Do not pinch a dense 65-plants/m² crop and expect the same airflow or stem quality.
Light and the 16-Hour Flowering Requirement
Lake Michigan is an obligate long-day cut flower. PanAmerican Seed specifies a 16-hour day for dependable flowering. Natural South African days are shorter than this, so professional growers planning uniform stems should use photoperiod lighting. An older Ball production method starts additional light when plants are about 25 cm tall and continues until roughly 40% of the crop has been harvested.
Home gardeners without lighting should favour a lengthening-day spring schedule, keep plants in sun or bright partial sun and expect flowering to be later or less uniform. A late-summer-to-autumn crop can work in mild protected production, but it needs the same long-day control; “all year” does not remove that requirement.
Soil, Water, Feeding and Airflow
- Position: Grow in sun to partial sun. In very hot dry districts, morning sun with afternoon relief helps establishment; deep shade weakens stems and flowering.
- Soil: Use fertile, loose, well-drained soil near pH 6.0–6.5. Raised rows are safer in heavy winter or summer-rain soil.
- Water: Keep moisture uniform during establishment and early stem growth. Avoid repeated swings from very dry to saturated. As umbels develop, continue deep root-zone watering without keeping the crown or foliage wet.
- Feeding: Feed moderately after plugs establish. Avoid high-ammonium or high-salt feeding and stop pushing soft nitrogen-rich growth as flower heads form.
- Airflow: Use the correct density, support stems and water early at soil level. Remove fallen and diseased material promptly.
When to Grow Trachelium in South Africa
Lake Michigan is a mid-season series for mild, protected cut-flower conditions. Count back 7–9 weeks for plugs and another 10–18 weeks to finish. The regional windows below are practical adaptations of that crop timing, the 17–21°C germination range, the 16-hour flowering requirement and local frost, heat and rainfall.
Winter-rainfall Western Cape
Start protected trays from late autumn into winter for a lengthening-day crop, then transplant from midwinter to early spring in mild coastal sites for late-spring to early-summer stems. Keep trays and crowns out of heavy winter rain and use raised, sharply drained rows. A late-summer-to-early-autumn transplant can target autumn-to-early-winter stems only where temperatures remain mild and 16-hour lighting is available.
Frost-prone interior
Raise plugs under protection in winter and transplant only after the severe-frost period, using spring's lengthening days. Protect young plants from late frost and cold wind. Do not use an outdoor autumn schedule where seedlings or crowns will freeze; a winter or autumn cut-flower crop requires a controlled protected structure and photoperiod lighting.
Humid coast and KZN Midlands
On the mild frost-free coast, use late winter to spring as the simplest lengthening-day window; a late-summer transplant is possible with photoperiod lighting and strong disease control. In the cooler KZN Midlands, start under protection and wait until local frost and cold-soil risk have passed. In both areas, use wide airflow, raised rows and morning root-zone watering to limit bacterial blight, Botrytis and root rot.
Hot-dry or subtropical interior
Use the cool shoulder seasons rather than trying to establish plugs through peak summer heat. Start protected trays in winter for spring planting, or use a late-summer crop only in long, frost-free sites with dependable long-day lighting. Give young plants afternoon relief, maintain even root moisture and avoid hot stagnant tunnels; excessive heat can delay or disrupt bud formation.
Flowering, Harvest and Vase Life
Expect an upright filler-flower crop with large central umbels and smaller side umbels on stems about 76–107 cm long. Use the packet's 22 weeks from sowing as a planning point, not a promise. The named breeder places plugs at 7–9 weeks and transplant-to-finish at 10–18 weeks; a newer general culture sheet gives 10–14 weeks after transplant. Season, temperature, pinching and daylength can move harvest.
Cut when half or more of the tiny florets in an umbel are open. Use clean tools and place stems in clean water immediately. A clean commercial holding solution may be used according to its label. Avoid ethylene exposure. Under professional handling, the breeder gives an average vase life of about 11 days; extended cold storage shortens it.
Pests and Disease Prevention
- Aphids, thrips and leaf rollers: inspect growing tips, leaf undersides and flower heads. Remove badly affected material and conserve natural enemies.
- Bacterial blight and Botrytis: avoid crowded wet foliage, water early at soil level and disinfect cutting tools between affected plants.
- Pythium, Phytophthora and Rhizoctonia: use clean trays, free-draining media and raised rows; never leave plugs or crowns standing in water.
If a plant-protection product is needed, use only one currently registered in South Africa for the crop, site and problem, and follow the label. Correct drainage, airflow and irrigation before relying on a treatment.
Why Germination or Establishment Fails
- Pellet stays hard: it was not fully wetted or the surface dried. Re-wet gently without flooding the cell.
- No seedlings: the pellet was buried under the packet's outdated 1 mm method, the tray was outside 17–21°C, moisture fluctuated or the mix was too salty.
- Emergence seems late: 5–7 days is a controlled breeder window. Keep a healthy tray stable through the current packet's 15–21 days.
- Seedlings collapse: contaminated trays, stagnant air or saturated mix encouraged damping-off and root disease.
- Seedlings stretch: light was weak after emergence, plants stayed crowded or nitrogen was excessive.
- Transplants stall: plugs were moved too young, roots were torn, the crown was buried or plants were not hardened.
- Strong leaves but no umbels: the crop did not receive the required 16-hour day, stayed too hot, or was pushed with excess nitrogen.
- Stems bend or tangle: support was installed too late, spacing was too wide for an unpinched crop, or plants were shaded.
- Roots or crowns rot: drainage is poor or watering is too frequent. Move future plants to a raised, well-aired row.
Seed and Plant Safety
These products are sold for ornamental cut-flower growing, not for food. Do not eat the pellets, seedlings or plant parts, and do not use them for sprouts or microgreens. Pelleted describes seed form; it is not proof that a lot is untreated. Keep packets away from children and pets, wash hands after sowing and follow any warning on the delivered lot.
