How to Grow Peas in South Africa: Greenfeast and Oregon Sugar Pod II
Grow sweet peas for shelling and crisp, flat snow peas by matching the sowing window to your local cool season. Greenfeast gives you plump peas to remove from the pod, while Oregon Sugar Pod II is harvested earlier so you can eat the tender pod and immature peas together.

When to Sow Peas in South Africa
Winter-rainfall Western Cape
Sow from April to August, with the most reliable batches established once autumn soil has cooled. Use a raised or free-draining bed where winter rain saturates the ground, and leave enough airflow for wet weather. Finish later sowings early enough to flower and fill pods before hot, dry spring wind and summer heat reduce quality.
Frost-prone Interior
Sow from July to September as the worst hard frost begins to ease. Pea seedlings tolerate brief light frost better than flowers and young pods, so use frost cloth during severe nights and avoid an exposed frost pocket. Aim to finish the crop before early-summer heat. In very cold districts, a late-winter sowing is safer than an autumn crop that flowers during hard frost.
Humid Coast and KZN Midlands
On the warm humid coast, sow from March to June. In the cooler KZN Midlands, June to July is usually more reliable, adjusted for local frost pockets. Give the plants morning sun, a full 60 cm between rows, support and good airflow. Water at soil level early in the day so foliage is not wet overnight.
Hot-dry or Subtropical Interior
Sow from March to June as the hottest conditions pass, concentrating on the coolest practical local window. Use dependable irrigation and mulch only after seedlings establish. In reliably frost-free gardens, small succession sowings two weeks apart can extend harvest, but stop once the crop would flower in sustained heat.
How to Sow and Establish Peas
- Choose full sun in cool weather and well-drained soil with mature compost. Peas prefer roughly pH 5.8–7.0.
- Install low trellis netting or twiggy support before sowing so later stakes do not damage roots.
- Water the bed, allow excess water to drain, then sow the raw seed dry and 10 mm deep as stated on the current packets.
- Space seeds 5 cm apart in rows 60 cm apart. For an intensive supported bed, use two rows 10–15 cm apart on opposite sides of one trellis while retaining 5–10 cm between final plants and a clear path around the bed.

Soaking, Inoculant and Nodulation
Soaking can shorten germination in some extension trials, but it is not necessary for these products and the current media does not confirm that every lot is chemically untreated. Four to six weeks after emergence, healthy active root nodules are pink to red inside. White or absent nodules can signal ineffective bacteria, excess soil nitrogen, acidity, drought or waterlogging.
Watering, Feeding and Support
- Water: Irrigate deeply enough to moisten the root zone, then allow the surface to begin drying before watering again. Never leave peas in saturated soil.
- Critical stage: Moisture stress after flowering causes flower and pod abortion, smaller peas, tougher pods and poorer quality.
- Feeding: Work in mature compost before sowing and use a soil test where possible. Avoid heavy nitrogen feeding, which encourages leaves, suppresses nodulation and delays flowers and pods.

Check the pods instead of relying on days alone: shell Greenfeast when pods are full but still tender and green; pick Oregon Sugar Pod II before seed swelling rounds out the pod. Harvest in the cool morning and chill peas promptly because sweetness declines after picking.
Pests, Diseases and Safe Crop Care
Watch emerging rows for cutworms, slugs, snails, birds and rodents. Inspect soft shoots and flower clusters for pea aphids, which can spread enation mosaic and other viruses. Pea weevil larvae can enter young pods. Use netting, hand removal, weed control and a strong water spray for light aphid infestations before considering a pesticide.
Root rot and damping-off are most likely in compacted, wet soil. Powdery mildew increases late in the crop and where airflow is poor; prolonged humidity and leaf wetness favour other foliage diseases. Rotate peas and other legumes out of the bed for two to three seasons where space allows, remove badly diseased debris and do not work among wet plants. If treatment is necessary, use only a product registered in South Africa for edible peas and the identified problem, follow the label exactly and observe the harvest withholding period.
Why Germination, Establishment or Pod Set Fails
- No emergence
- The seed zone was too cold, dried out, stayed saturated, crusted over, or pests removed the seed. Re-sow 10 mm deep into evenly moist, free-draining soil.
- Swollen seed turns soft
- Waterlogging, unnecessary soaking or cold wet soil encouraged rot. Improve drainage and sow dry into a pre-moistened bed.
- Seedlings yellow or stop

- Plants fall over
- Support was installed too late or is too smooth for tendrils. Add low mesh or twiggy branches carefully without spearing the root zone.
- Lots of leaves but few flowers
- Too much nitrogen, shade or an unsuitable temperature window can delay reproductive growth.
- Flowers drop or pods stay empty
- Hard frost, heat, dry wind, drought or saturated roots interrupted set. Stabilise moisture and shift the next sowing window.
- Pods are tough or starchy
- They were picked late, plants were water-stressed or the crop matured in heat. Harvest more frequently and cool the pods quickly.
- Leaves curl, mottle or powder
- Inspect for aphids and virus symptoms or powdery mildew. Remove badly affected plants, improve airflow and identify the problem before using a registered control.
