When to Sow Larkspur in South Africa
Larkspur is a cool-season annual. Seed germinates best near 10–13°C, and young plants flower best after a sustained cool establishment period. Do not wait automatically for warm spring soil: seed can fail above about 13°C, and plants established into rapid heat may stay short or flower poorly.
Winter-rainfall Western Cape
Direct-sow from autumn into early winter, usually after the first reliable rains when the seedbed is cool but not waterlogged. This gives seedlings a cool establishment period before spring flowering. Use a raised or slightly mounded bed in heavy soil, protect new rows from driving rain and slugs, and water only when rain is insufficient. Avoid late spring sowing into warming soil and hot, dry summer conditions.
Frost-prone interior
Sow in late winter to very early spring while the soil is still cool, but time emergence for the period when severe frost is easing. Direct sow in a sheltered bed and use frost cloth over young seedlings during hard freezes. If the bed cannot be protected, start one seed per deep cell in a bright, unheated protected place 5–7 weeks before planting out, then move the intact plugs after gradual hardening. Do not delay until hot summer soil arrives.
Humid coast and KZN Midlands
Choose the coolest practical window, generally autumn into early winter, and avoid humid summer establishment. Use morning-to-full sun, excellent drainage, 20 cm spacing and strong airflow. Hot-dry or subtropical interior
Use the mildest part of the year. In frost-free subtropical sites, sow in late autumn or winter; in hot-dry places with winter frost, sow under light protection in late winter while the root zone is cool. Keep the seedbed evenly moist during germination, then water deeply without saturating the crown. As days warm, light afternoon shade or 30–50% shade cloth can protect flower quality, but deep shade weakens stems.
Prepare the Seed and Seedbed
The current products are sold as raw seed. “Raw” describes the sale form; it is not a guarantee that every future lot is chemically untreated. Check the label on the packet you receive. If a lot carries a treatment warning, follow it exactly, wear the stated protective equipment and never use the seed for food or feed.
- Choose a full-sun position with fertile, free-draining soil. Larkspur tolerates slightly alkaline soil but performs poorly in a wet, airless root zone.
- Remove weeds and rake the bed to a fine, level surface. Work in mature compost if the soil is poor, but avoid a heavy dose of nitrogen-rich manure that produces soft growth.
- Optional cool preparation: place dry seed in a sealed container in a refrigerator near 2°C for 7 days before sowing. This can improve germination where seed or soil has been warm. Do not freeze or soak the seed.
- Water the bed before sowing and let surplus water drain. A settled seedbed reduces the chance of tiny seed being washed too deep.
How to Sow at the Correct Depth

- Place seed thinly, then cover to the product’s stated depth. Larkspur needs darkness to germinate, so do not surface-sow or leave seed exposed.
- Firm the covering gently for seed-to-soil contact without compacting the bed.
- Keep the seed zone consistently moist, not saturated. A fine rose or gentle drip line is safer than a hard stream.
- Aim for 10–13°C. Allow the full packet window of 14–21 days before judging the sowing.
- Label each row because the two products have different packet depths and must keep their own guide anchors.
Direct Sowing or Transplanting?
Direct sowing is preferred. Annual larkspur develops a taproot and can stall after root disturbance. Direct-sown plants usually establish more evenly and are simpler to support in a cutting row.
If trays are necessary, use deep plug cells or biodegradable cells, sow one seed per cell and keep the tray close to 13°C. Grow the seedlings in bright light, never warm and soft. Plant out after about 5–7 weeks while the root ball still holds together and before roots circle the cell. Harden seedlings gradually for 7–10 days, lift them by the plug rather than the stem and set them at the same depth. Water in once and protect from wind and severe frost while they re-establish.
Thin, Space and Support the Stems
Thin or plant to the packet spacing of 20 cm. Keep the strongest seedling and snip extras at soil level rather than pulling beside the taproot you want to retain. In a carefully managed cut-flower row, professional references sometimes use 10–15 cm for straighter single stems, but that denser spacing needs excellent airflow and support. For most home gardens—and especially humid regions—the local 20 cm packet spacing is the safer rule.
Set support early, before stems lean. Use one or two horizontal layers of flower netting over a row, raising them as the plants grow, or run strings on both sides of the row at roughly 30 and 45 cm high. GI has solid stems, but exposed plants can still lodge in wind or heavy rain. QIS reaches up to about 1.2 m and should be supported in most open cutting beds. Individual border plants can be tied discreetly to slender stakes.
Water, Feed and Maintain Airflow
Keep the root zone evenly moist through establishment and flowering, then let the upper surface begin to dry before watering again. Do not leave the crown in saturated soil. Water at soil level in the morning so foliage and flowers stay dry. Larkspur in containers or raised beds may need more frequent checks, especially when warm wind arrives.
In reasonably fertile soil, compost plus one light, balanced feed after thinning is usually enough. A second light feed as spikes begin to form can support flowering. Stop adding nitrogen if growth becomes soft or floppy. Do not pinch out the central growing tip: these varieties are grown for tall spikes. Cut spent flower stems before they set seed if you want a tidier display and possible side-stem flowering.
Watch for slugs and snails around cool-season seedlings, and inspect new growth for aphids, mites and leaf miners. Hand-pick where practical, remove badly affected leaves and correct crowding, poor drainage or overhead watering. Root and crown rots, powdery mildew, stem canker and bacterial leaf spotting become more likely in wet, stagnant conditions. If a pesticide or fungicide is needed, use only a product registered in South Africa for the crop and problem, and follow the label exactly.
Flowering, Cutting and Drying
The current packet labels give about 130–150 days from sowing to bloom. Weather, sowing date and the length of the cool establishment period can move that timing. GI Fieldgrown Mix produces tall, fully double mixed spikes, while QIS Formula Mix is valued for uniform stem and colour quality. Both are suitable for garden display, fresh cutting and drying.
- Fresh flowers: cut when 2–3 basal flowers are open and no more than about the lower third of the spike is open. Cut in the cool morning, remove leaves below the water line and place stems straight into clean water. Typical vase life is about 5–7 days.
- Dried flowers: cut when most flowers on the spike are open but before petals begin to drop. Strip lower leaves and hang small bunches upside down in a cool, dry, dark, well-ventilated place.
- Safety after cutting: vase water, fresh stems and dried flowers remain unsuitable for eating. Keep arrangements away from children and animals, and do not place larkspur where fallen material can enter feed or grazing areas.
Why Germination or Establishment Fails
- No seedlings after 21 days: the soil was warmer than about 13°C, the seed dried after sowing, the lot lost viability, or seed was left exposed to light. Repeat in cooler soil, cover to 3 mm for GI or 4 mm for QIS, and keep moisture steady.
- Patchy emergence: the bed crusted, a hard watering stream moved the seed, or some seed sat too deep. Rake a finer seedbed and water gently.
- Seedlings collapse: saturated soil and still air caused damping-off or crown disease. Improve drainage, reduce surface wetness and thin promptly.
- Plants stall after planting: the taproot was disturbed or roots circled in a shallow cell. Direct sow next time, or transplant a younger intact deep plug.
- Plants flower short or sparsely: they missed a sustained cool establishment period, were sown into rapid heat, received too much nitrogen or grew in deep shade.
- Stems bend or fall: support was installed too late, plants were overfed, or wind and heavy rain caught tall unnetted stems. Add support before the spikes lengthen.
- Leaves spot or mildew spreads: rows are crowded, drainage is poor or foliage stays wet. Use 20 cm spacing, morning soil-level watering and better airflow; remove affected plants promptly.
- Flowers drop quickly in a vase: stems were cut too open, tools or water were dirty, or the vase was placed near ripening fruit. Harvest earlier and keep arrangements cool and clean.
