• Botanical name:Mimulus × hybridus; synonym Erythranthe × hybrida.
• Growth form: Compact spreading annual, 20–25 cm high and wide.
• Position: Bright partial shade; morning sun and afternoon shade in warm districts.
• Sowing depth: Surface sow; do not cover pellets.
• Germination: 18–20°C, about 5–7 days.
• Spacing: 20–25 cm in beds; 15–20 cm in containers with airflow.

Sowing and transplanting

Fill clean cells with free-draining seedling mix and water first. Place one pellet on the surface; mist or bottom-water so pellets stay consistently moist until they dissolve. Keep trays at 18–20°C in bright indirect light. Do not soak, chip or pre-treat pellets. Transplant after true leaves develop, harden off, then plant into humus-rich, well-drained soil. Keep soil evenly moist, feed lightly with a balanced liquid fertiliser after establishment and remove spent flowers.

Wash hands after handling seed and keep seed away from children, pets and food-preparation surfaces. This is an ornamental plant: do not treat flowers or foliage as edible.

Regional timing

Winter-rainfall Western Cape

Sow late summer to autumn for cool-season colour; protect from waterlogging and late frost.

Frost-prone interior

Start protected trays late winter to early spring and plant after hard frost; alternatively sow late summer for autumn colour.

Humid coast and KZN Midlands

Use the cooler part of the year with morning sun, afternoon shade and generous airflow.

Hot-dry or subtropical interior

Sow for the cooler season or use a shaded container; shield from hot afternoon sun and drying wind.

Pests, diseases and troubleshooting

Check for aphids, whiteflies and thrips. Start with a firm water spray or hand removal where appropriate, and use only registered products as labelled. Prevent botrytis and root rots with clean media, drainage, airflow and soil-level watering.

• No germination: pellets may have dried out, been covered, or been too cold/hot. Re-sow on a moist surface at 18–20°C.
• Weak seedlings: improve bright indirect light and airflow.
• Bud drop: give morning sun, afternoon shade and even moisture.
• Yellowing or collapse: improve drainage and use clean, free-draining mix.
