Quick Grow Facts
-
Scientific name: Trachelium caeruleum
-
Series and colour: Lake Michigan White
-
Plant type: Tender perennial commonly scheduled as a cut-flower crop
-
Seed form: Pelleted; sow each pellet intact
-
Pretreatment: None; do not soak, chill, scarify, crush or peel the pellet
-
Sow depth: Surface sow and do not cover
-
Germination light: Optional; provide bright light after emergence
-
Germination temperature: 17–21°C
-
Germination reference: Allow 15–21 days for home emergence. The controlled 5–7-day interval measures 50% to maximum germination, not sowing to first emergence
-
Best method: One pellet per clean cell; tray sowing preferred
-
Position: Sun to partial sun; protect new plants from severe heat
-
Garden spacing: About 25 cm in a home garden; retain airflow and access
-
Cut-row density: About 65 plants/m² unpinched or 24 plants/m² pinched
-
Growth form: Upright cut-flower filler, about 76–107 cm; support recommended
-
Flowering: Obligate long-day crop; dependable professional flowering uses a 16-hour day
-
Planning window: About 7–9 weeks in plugs, then 10–18 weeks from transplant to finish under managed conditions; home timing varies
-
Harvest: Cut when half or more of the small florets are open
Pellet Moisture Matters
Place the pellet on pre-moistened fine seedling mix, wet it thoroughly and keep the surface evenly moist until the coating softens and germination starts. A hard dry pellet cannot release the seed; a saturated airless tray encourages damping-off.
Growing and Cutting Notes
Transplant rooted plugs after about 7–9 weeks and harden them for 7–10 days. Use fertile, loose, well-drained soil, steady root-zone moisture, moderate feeding and good airflow. Install support netting early. Pinching is optional; use the wider 24-plants/m² system for branched cut stems and allow extra crop time.
Follow the guide's regional timing, surface-sowing method and long-day flowering guidance.
Ornamental seed: Do not eat seed, pellets, seedlings or plant parts. Pelleted describes seed form and does not confirm treatment status; follow the delivered lot warning.
