Grow a fresh row of Tatsoi for tender, spoon-shaped leaves with a mild mustard flavour. This compact Asian brassica is especially useful for cool-season salads and stir-fries. Ready to get it growing? Follow our Tatsoi Grow Guide for shallow sowing, regional timing, seedling care and harvest advice.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: Cool-season leafy vegetable.
  • Botanical Name: Brassica rapa Narinosa Group.
  • Best Sowing Time: Cool to mild local growing periods; avoid severe heat and protect young plants from hard frost.
  • Position: Sun in cool weather, with light afternoon shade where heat builds.
  • Sow Depth: About 5–6 mm in a fine, moist seedbed.
  • Spacing: Thin to about 20 cm for full rosettes; sow closer for baby leaves and thin or harvest to maintain airflow.
  • Emergence: Often roughly 5–15 days in a moist, moderately cool seedbed around 10–20°C; conditions can change this.
  • Harvest: Pick useful-sized baby or outer leaves, or cut a tender full rosette; no fixed day count applies to every garden.

Why Grow Tatsoi?

Its dark, spoon-shaped leaves form a low rosette that fits a kitchen bed or container. Pick a few outer leaves as needed, or harvest the whole plant while tender.

Garden Uses

Use clean young leaves in salads, or cook them lightly in stir-fries, soups and stews.

Growing Notes

Sow shallowly into fertile, freely draining soil. Keep the seedbed evenly moist, thin seedlings for the harvest size you want, and check young plants for flea-beetle holes and slugs. Sow another short row during suitable cool weather for a continuing harvest.

Use seed sold for sowing to grow plants, not as food or sprouts. Follow the label and harvest interval of any treatment used on edible leaves.
