Quick Grow Facts
-
Plant Type: Warm-season edible squash
-
Variety: Caserta
-
Scientific Name: Cucurbita pepo
-
Outcome: Immature summer squash; frequent picking sustains production.
-
General Sowing Time: Use September–January in cool frost districts, August–January/February in warm light-frost districts, or the cooler March–May and July–October windows in hot frost-free districts.
-
Position: Full sun
-
Growth Form: Compact open bush, not a long trailing vine; no support, pinching or pruning is required.
-
Pretreatment: No pretreatment needed; sow dry
-
Method: Warm direct sow preferred; transplant only a young intact plug before it becomes root-bound
-
Sow Depth: About 10 mm in warm, moist, free-draining soil.
-
Germination: 7–14 days at a 21–30°C seed-zone target; do not direct sow below 18°C
-
Final Spacing: 50 cm between plants and 120 cm between rows; keep the bush centre open to light and airflow.
-
Harvest: First tender fruit in about 50–65 days. Pick at roughly 12–15 cm and harvest every one to two days in peak production.
Why Grow This Variety
- The compact bush form suits smaller vegetable beds.
- Striped tender fruit is ready substantially earlier than storage squash.
- Frequent picking can maintain a long sequence of young fruit.
Garden Uses
Pick young for grilling, sautéing, roasting, salads, fritters and quick summer dishes.
Growing Notes
- Direct sow is preferred, but a young two-true-leaf plug can be transplanted before it becomes root-bound.
- Do not wait for a hard rind: Caserta is the immature summer-squash module.
- Water consistently from flowering onward; drought and poor pollination cause misshapen fruit.
- Cut fruit with a short stem and handle gently because tender skin bruises easily.
Seed safety: Seed sold for sowing is not food. Do not eat it or use it for feed, sprouts or microgreens; choose seed explicitly supplied for edible sprouting if that is your goal.
