Grow Guide: How to grow Sprinkles ranunculus from pelleted seed in South Africa.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: Cool-season Ranunculus asiaticus, usually grown as a seasonal ornamental
  • Scientific Name: Ranunculus asiaticus
  • Series: Sprinkles® Mix pelleted seed
  • Seed Form: Single-seed pellet
  • South African Sowing Time: Late summer to autumn, or the coolest practical window
  • Position: Full sun in cool districts; morning sun and light afternoon protection in hot districts
  • Sow Depth: Cover loosely about 1 mm
  • Light: Dark germination is suggested; provide bright light after emergence
  • Germination: Use the practical constant 10–15°C breeder option and allow about 14–28 days
  • Pretreatment: Do not soak pellets or refrigerate dry seed; the optional cold programme is applied after sowing
  • Transplanting: Pot on at about 10 weeks when seedlings have four to five leaves; harden off for 7–10 days
  • Spacing: About 25 cm
  • Growth Type: Compact rounded growth form; this is Sprinkles Original, not Sprinkles Dwarf
  • Height and Spread: Approximately 23–30 cm high and 18–30 cm wide
  • Flowering Time: Cool-season to early-spring display; local timing varies with the temperature programme
  • Flower Outcome: A mix of abundant bright flowers on compact plants; individual seed colours vary

Why Grow This Variety

  • Its compact size makes it a natural choice for container gardening.
  • It thrives in cool conditions, although it should be protected from frost.
  • A long flowering period is possible when plants are kept at temperatures up to 15°C.

Garden Uses

Display in pots near an entrance or on a patio, edge a garden bed, or grow indoors in a cool room.

Growing Notes

  • Use clean cells and fine, freely drained seedling mix; sow one pellet per cell and apply the exact cover above.
  • Follow the germination temperature and timing above; keep evenly moist but never saturated.
  • Pot on at about 10 weeks when seedlings have four to five leaves; harden off for 7–10 days. Keep crowns at soil level after planting.
  • Use bright light, cool conditions, active airflow and the spacing above. Warm, stagnant or winter-wet soil causes most establishment failures.
  • Ranunculus is ornamental and not edible. Sap may irritate skin; keep seed and plants away from children and pets.
