Grow Guide: How to grow Maché ranunculus from pelleted seed in South Africa.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: Cool-season Ranunculus asiaticus, usually grown as a seasonal ornamental
  • Scientific Name: Ranunculus asiaticus
  • Series: Maché™ F1 pelleted seed
  • Seed Form: Single-seed pellet
  • South African Sowing Time: Late summer to autumn, or another cool window when a 10–13°C germination medium can be maintained
  • Position: Full sun in cool districts; morning sun and light afternoon protection in hot districts
  • Sow Depth: Cover with a thin layer of fine mix or medium vermiculite, about 1 mm
  • Light: Light is not required during germination; provide bright light after emergence
  • Germination: 14–21 days at 10–13°C
  • Pretreatment: Do not soak pellets or routinely pre-chill dry seed; keep the sown tray cool
  • Transplanting: Transplant a sturdy root-held plug after about 8–10 weeks; harden off for 7–10 days
  • Spacing: 25–30 cm
  • Growth Type: Upright pot-and-garden growth form with strong flower stems
  • Height and Spread: Approximately 25–30 cm high and 25–30 cm wide
  • Flowering Time: About 12–14 weeks after potting, or roughly 20–24 weeks from sowing, under controlled conditions
  • Flower Outcome: A mix of bright fully double flowers; individual seed colours vary

Why Grow This Variety

  • Large yellow, white, pink, red, orange and purple flowers provide a strong colour feature.
  • Strong stems support the large flowers.
  • The blooms and stems suit cutting and floral displays.
  • Dark green foliage provides contrast behind the flowers.

Garden Uses

Use Ranunculus Mache Mix in borders or containers, and cut stems for floral arrangements.

Growing Notes

  • Use clean cells and fine, freely drained seedling mix; sow one pellet per cell and apply the exact cover above.
  • Follow the germination temperature and timing above; keep evenly moist but never saturated.
  • Transplant a sturdy root-held plug after about 8–10 weeks; harden off for 7–10 days. Keep crowns at soil level after planting.
  • Use bright light, cool conditions, active airflow and the spacing above. Warm, stagnant or winter-wet soil causes most establishment failures.
  • Ranunculus is ornamental and not edible. Sap may irritate skin; keep seed and plants away from children and pets.
