Quick Grow Facts
-
Plant Type: Warm-season edible storage pumpkin
-
Variety: Flat White Boer A
-
Scientific Name: Cucurbita maxima
-
Outcome: Mature hard-rinded pumpkin for cooking; cure sound fruit before cool, dry, airy storage
-
General Sowing Time: Sow after frost into soil at least 18°C. Use September–November in winter-rainfall and frost-prone districts; use the cooler local slot in humid or subtropical frost-free areas.
-
Position: Full sun
-
Seed Form: Raw, unpelleted seed; sale form does not confirm chemical-treatment status
-
Active Pack Sizes: 10 g raw seed, 100 g raw seed
-
Growth Form: Vigorous trailing vine; allow 2–3 m of run. No routine pruning is required.
-
Pretreatment: None shown on the current label; sow dry unless the delivered lot label says otherwise
-
Method: Warm direct sow preferred; transplant only a very young intact plug before roots bind
-
Sow Depth and Light: 5 mm; cover fully with fine moist soil or mix, because light is not required before emergence
-
Germination: 7–14 days at a 20–25°C seed-zone target; do not direct sow below 18°C
-
Final Spacing: 50 cm between plants and 200 cm between rows on the current label; allow up to 270 cm between rows where space permits
-
Harvest: Current packet: 110–170 days. KZN guidance places Flat White Boer types around 110–130 days. Harvest by mature colour, hard rind and a dry corky stem rather than the calendar alone.
Why Grow This Variety
- The mature light rind and flattened shape create a distinctive South African pumpkin.
- Fine, dry orange flesh suits both savoury dishes and baking.
- The pale rind is less prone to obvious sunscald than dark fruit, although healthy leaf cover still matters.
- Open-pollinated seed allows true-to-type saving only where flowers are isolated from compatible crossing cucurbits.
Garden Uses
Harvest fully mature fruit for roasting, soups, stews, curries and baking. Cure only sound, hard-rinded fruit intended for storage.
Growing Notes
- Keep the seed zone evenly moist through emergence, then water deeply at soil level.
- Use fertile, freely drained soil with mature compost; avoid repeated high-nitrogen feeding.
- Protect morning pollinators and hand-pollinate early if female flowers fail to set.
- Keep developing fruit on dry straw or a board and preserve healthy foliage for feeding and shade.
- Cut mature fruit with a short stem; cure about 7–10 days in warm, dry airflow before storage.
Food and seed safety: The mature flesh is edible, but discard unusually or intensely bitter fruit. Seed is for sowing, not eating, feed, sprouts or microgreens. Follow the delivered lot label and keep seed away from children and pets.
