How to Grow Potatoes in Your Potato Grower

Position

Potatoes grow best in a position that receives full sun for most of the day.

Soil

For the best results:

• Use a light, loose and well-draining growing medium.
• Aim for a soil pH of approximately 5.0–7.0.
• Avoid growing a new potato crop in the same used soil. Replace or refresh the growing medium before planting another crop.

Preparing Your Seed Potatoes

For reliable results, we recommend using certified disease-free seed potatoes.

Before planting:

1. Place the seed potatoes in a bright area at approximately 15–21°C to encourage sprouting.
2. Once strong shoots or "eyes" have developed, larger seed potatoes can be cut into approximately egg-sized pieces.
3. Make sure each piece has at least 1–2 healthy eyes or shoots.
4. Use a clean knife when cutting.
5. Leave the cut pieces in a cool, well-ventilated area for approximately 5–6 days before planting. This allows the cut surfaces to callous over and helps reduce the risk of rotting.

Small seed potatoes can generally be planted whole.

Planting

1. Add approximately 100–150 mm of soil to the bottom of the Potato Grower.
2. Plant the prepared seed potatoes with the shoots or eyes pointing upwards.
3. Plant a maximum of approximately 3–4 seed potatoes per layer, depending on their size.
4. Cover with soil and water well.
5. Allow the foliage to develop over the following 2–4 weeks.
6. As the potato plants grow taller, gradually add more soil around the stems, leaving the upper leaves exposed.
7. Continue adding soil as the plants grow until the container is filled.

This process, commonly called earthing up, provides space for developing tubers and keeps new potatoes protected from sunlight.

Important: Always keep developing potatoes covered with soil. Potatoes exposed to sunlight can turn green and should not be eaten.

Additional seed potatoes may be planted in another layer once approximately 100–150 mm of additional soil has been added, if desired.

Watering

Potatoes prefer consistently moist soil but should never remain waterlogged.

• Aim for approximately 25 mm of water per week, including rainfall.
• Pay particular attention to watering during flowering, as this is when the developing potato tubers are actively growing.
• Ensure excess water can drain freely from the planter.
• Remove the drainage plug on the side of the pot to allow excess water to escape.

Once the foliage begins turning yellow and dying back naturally, reduce and eventually stop watering. This helps the potatoes mature and their skins begin to cure before harvesting.

Harvesting Your Potatoes

One of the biggest benefits of the Potato Grower is the ability to harvest potatoes without emptying the whole container.

For fresh baby or new potatoes, harvesting can usually begin approximately 2–3 weeks after flowering has finished.

Simply:

1. Carefully lift or remove the inner planter.
2. Gently inspect the developing potatoes.
3. Harvest the largest potatoes you would like to use.
4. Leave smaller potatoes in place so they can continue growing.
5. Return the inner planter and soil to position with minimal disturbance to the plant.

For a full harvest, wait until the foliage has naturally yellowed and died back.

Storing Your Harvest

Freshly harvested potatoes should be stored in a cool, dark and well-ventilated place.

For best storage:

• Do not wash potatoes immediately after harvesting.
• Allow the skins to dry and cure for approximately 2–3 days.
• Brush off excess dry soil once cured.
• Do not store potatoes in direct sunlight.
• For longer-term storage, avoid storing potatoes in the refrigerator.
