Poppy Colibri Corallo (Coral) Seed produces warm coral Iceland poppy blooms with an airy, romantic garden feel. It is a beautiful cool-season choice for South African gardeners building soft colour into beds, containers and cutting patches.

Plant Information

  • Plant Type: Short-lived perennial, usually grown as a cool-season annual in South African gardens.
  • Scientific Name: Papaver nudicaule (Iceland poppy)

Growing Information

  • General Sowing Time: Autumn to early winter in mild South African regions; late winter to early spring in very cold gardens or where winter soil stays waterlogged.
  • Position: Full sun; light afternoon shade can help in hotter inland gardens.
  • Sow Depth: Surface sow or cover with only a very fine layer of sand or vermiculite; light helps germination.
  • Spacing: 20-30 cm apart.
  • Germination: Keep the seed surface evenly moist until seedlings appear, then grow on in cool, bright conditions.
  • Height: Around 30-60 cm.
  • Available Pack Sizes: 50 raw seed, 500 raw seed

Why Grow Poppy Colibri Corallo?

  • Warm coral blooms bridge orange, pink and apricot colour palettes.
  • Lovely for fresh cut flowers and informal seasonal bunches.
  • Adds soft movement and texture to cool-season beds.
  • Works well in containers where drainage is good and plants receive plenty of light.
  • Attracts pollinators during the cooler months.

Garden Uses

Use Poppy Colibri Corallo in sunny cool-season borders, patio pots and cut-flower rows. The coral colour combines beautifully with white, cream, peach, lavender, blue and deep wine-toned companion flowers.

Growing Notes

  • Best grown through the cooler part of the year; flowering quality drops as heat and humidity increase.
  • Direct sow where plants are to flower, or transplant very young seedlings with minimal root disturbance.
  • Use fertile but free-draining soil and avoid waterlogged beds or pots.
  • Water at soil level and keep evenly moist without leaving the soil soggy.
  • Pick or deadhead regularly to encourage continued flowering.
