Grow Guide: How to grow Petunia Pirouette Rose from seed in South Africa.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: F1 double grandiflora petunia, grown as a frost-tender annual
  • Scientific Name: Petunia × hybrida
  • Seed Form: Pelleted seed; sow one pellet per cell
  • South African Sowing Time: Start protected trays about 8–10 weeks before safe planting-out weather; use the regional guide for local timing
  • Position: Full sun; light afternoon relief only during severe heat
  • Sow Method: Surface-sow on pre-moistened fine mix, press into contact and do not cover; bright light supports home germination
  • Pretreatment: None; mist thoroughly so the pellet coating softens
  • Germination: Usually 7–10 days at 22–24°C; controlled breeder trays may be faster
  • Spacing: 25–36 cm
  • Growth Form: Mounded and upright
  • Height: 25–38 cm
  • Spread: 25–30 cm
  • Flowering: Usually about 12–16 weeks from sowing in home conditions
  • Current Packet Options: 25 pelleted seed, 500 pelleted seed, 5000 pelleted seed

Why Grow Petunia Pirouette Rose?

  • Large ruffled bicolour flowers create a soft, premium look in pots and borders.
  • Ruffled bicolour picotee blooms make this variety useful for high-impact seasonal colour.
  • Long flowering potential from spring into autumn in well-managed South African gardens.
  • Excellent for pots, baskets, window boxes, border fronts and patio colour.
  • Pelleted seed is easier to handle for accurate tray sowing.

Garden Uses

Use Petunia Pirouette Rose in patio pots, window boxes, edging rows and mixed flower beds where the ruffled rose-and-white blooms can be seen up close.

Growing Notes

  • Use clean, fine, freely drained seedling mix. Surface-sow and mist the pellet until its coating softens; never bury it.
  • Keep the surface evenly moist and humid only until emergence, then provide bright light and airflow.
  • Move seedlings at about three true leaves and harden them gradually for 7–10 days before planting outside.
  • Plant at the exact spacing above in fertile, freely drained soil and water at the root.
  • Shelter double blooms from hard rain, water at the root and remove collapsed flowers promptly.
