Grow Guide: How to grow Petunia Frost Mix from seed in South Africa.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: F1 grandiflora petunia, grown as a frost-tender annual
  • Scientific Name: Petunia grandiflora
  • Seed Form: Pelleted seed; sow one pellet per cell
  • South African Sowing Time: Start protected trays about 8–10 weeks before safe planting-out weather; use the regional guide for local timing
  • Position: Full sun; light afternoon relief only during severe heat
  • Sow Method: Surface-sow on pre-moistened fine mix, press into contact and do not cover; bright light supports home germination
  • Pretreatment: None; mist thoroughly so the pellet coating softens
  • Germination: Usually 7–10 days at 22–24°C; controlled breeder trays may be faster
  • Spacing: 35–40 cm
  • Growth Form: Vigorous and mounded
  • Height: 30–35 cm
  • Spread: 35–40 cm
  • Flowering: Usually about 10–14 weeks from sowing in well-managed home conditions
  • Current Packet Options: 25 pelleted seed, 500 pelleted seed, 1000 pelleted seed

Why Grow This Variety

  • White-edged blooms create clear visual contrast.
  • Flowers reach approximately 7 cm wide.
  • Spring-to-autumn colour supports a long display.
  • Robust growth fills beds and baskets effectively.

Garden Uses

Use Frost Mix in full-sun beds, containers or hanging baskets where its white-edged flowers can add contrast throughout the season.

Growing Notes

  • Use clean, fine, freely drained seedling mix. Surface-sow and mist the pellet until its coating softens; never bury it.
  • Keep the surface evenly moist and humid only until emergence, then provide bright light and airflow.
  • Move seedlings at about three true leaves and harden them gradually for 7–10 days before planting outside.
  • Plant at the exact spacing above in fertile, freely drained soil and water at the root.
  • The name describes the flower pattern, not frost tolerance; protect plants from frost and persistent rain.
