Grow Guide: How to grow Petunia Easy Wave Red Velour from seed in South Africa.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: F1 spreading petunia, grown as a frost-tender annual
  • Scientific Name: Petunia × hybrida
  • Seed Form: Pelleted seed; sow one pellet per cell
  • South African Sowing Time: Start protected trays about 8–10 weeks before safe planting-out weather; use the regional guide for local timing
  • Position: Full sun; light afternoon relief only during severe heat
  • Sow Method: Surface-sow on pre-moistened fine mix, press into contact and do not cover; bright light supports home germination
  • Pretreatment: None; mist thoroughly so the pellet coating softens
  • Germination: Usually 7–10 days at 22–25°C; controlled breeder trays may be faster
  • Spacing: 25–38 cm
  • Growth Form: Mounded and spreading
  • Height: 15–30 cm
  • Spread: 76–99 cm
  • Flowering: Usually about 10–14 weeks from sowing in well-managed home conditions
  • Current Packet Options: 10 pelleted seed, 250 pelleted seed

Why Grow This Variety

  • Velvety red blooms provide deep, concentrated colour.
  • Flowers reach approximately 6-7 cm wide.
  • Uniform growth supports a harmonious display.
  • A controlled, mounded growth form builds a broad spreading mound.

Garden Uses

Use Easy Wave Red Velour in full-sun beds, hanging baskets or containers where its broad spread can create a rich block of colour.

Growing Notes

  • Use clean, fine, freely drained seedling mix. Surface-sow and mist the pellet until its coating softens; never bury it.
  • Keep the surface evenly moist and humid only until emergence, then provide bright light and airflow.
  • Move seedlings at about three true leaves and harden them gradually for 7–10 days before planting outside.
  • Plant at the exact spacing above in fertile, freely drained soil and water at the root.
  • Do not pinch routinely; give the spreading shoots enough soil volume, water and feeding.
