Garden Uses

Plant Blue Steel in the middle or back of a sunny perennial border, gravel garden or water-wise planting. Allow space around the crown and avoid frequently irrigated lawn edges or low points that remain wet in winter.

Growing Notes

• Keep the seed surface evenly moist through emergence, never saturated; remove covers and increase airflow as soon as seedlings appear.
• Pinch the soft tip once, about two to three weeks after transplant, just above four to five leaf-node pairs. Repeated pinching delays flowering.
• Water regularly during establishment, then deeply and less often. Excess nitrogen and daily irrigation create soft, floppy stems.
• In the winter-rainfall Western Cape, use a raised gravelly position. In frost-prone interiors, plant hardened seedlings after severe frost. In humid coastal and KZN gardens, use 60 cm spacing, full sun and soil-level morning watering. In hot-dry or subtropical interiors, establish outside peak heat and reduce irrigation once rooted.
• Leave old stems through winter, then cut last season's growth back to about 15 cm or one to two live buds above the woody base in late winter or early spring.
