Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant type: F1 first-year-flowering perennial; often treated as seasonal bedding where hard frost or wet winters limit survival
  • Scientific name: Penstemon hartwegii
  • Series and colour: Syngenta Flowers Arabesque® F1 Appleblossom; creamy white with a pale pink blush
  • Seed form: Raw, unpelleted seed; current variants contain 15 or 250 seeds
  • Seed safety: Raw describes the form, not chemical-treatment status; do not eat seed and follow the physical lot label
  • General sowing time: Current packet: autumn; adapt protection and transplant timing to local frost and rainfall
  • Position: Full sun; open air and excellent drainage are important in humid or winter-wet gardens
  • Sow depth and light: Cover to the packet's 1 mm; the exact breeder protocol confirms light is not required
  • Pretreatment: None; no soaking, scarifying or cold stratification required
  • Germination: Packet 12–21 days; exact controlled breeder reference about 7 days at 20–23°C
  • Transplant: Breeder plug time about 5–6 weeks; plant when roots hold the plug and several true leaves are present, after 7–10 days of hardening
  • Spacing: Packet 30–60 cm; about 45–50 cm matches the mature width, with 50–60 cm useful for humid gardens
  • Growth form and size: Upright and well branched; about 50–60 cm high × 45–50 cm wide
  • Pinching and support: Routine pinching and support are not needed; one early pinch can add branches but delay flowering by 2–3 weeks
  • Flower outcome: Large creamy white, pale-blushed tubular flowers on sturdy spikes from mid spring through summer in suitable conditions

Why Grow Appleblossom?

  • Soft cream and blush-pink flowers combine easily with bright or pastel borders.
  • Upright, sturdy stems suit garden display and cutting.
  • The heat-loving F1 series can flower in its first year from seed.

Growing Notes

Sow one fine raw seed per clean cell, cover to 1 mm and hold the medium at 20–23°C. Keep the surface evenly moist through germination, then give seedlings strong light and airflow. Harden rooted plugs gradually and plant into fertile, free-draining soil. Water deeply through establishment, allow drainage between waterings, feed moderately and deadhead spent spikes. Use the wider spacing in wet or humid districts and protect soft plugs from hard frost.

Ornamental seed: No edible use is supported. Keep seed away from children, pets, food and feed, and follow the packet supplied with your lot.
