  • Plant Type: Cool-season short-lived perennial, usually grown as a seasonal annual.
  • Scientific Name: Viola × wittrockiana.
  • General Sowing Time: Late summer to autumn for winter and early-spring colour; late winter under protection for spring in hard-frost areas.
  • Position: Full sun in cool weather; morning sun with afternoon shade as temperatures rise.
  • Seed Form: Raw seed.
  • Pretreatment: None. Sow the raw seed directly; soaking or chilling is not required.
  • Sow Method: Cover with about 3 mm of vermiculite or fine seedling mix; light is not required during germination.
  • Germination: About 3–4 days at 18–21°C under controlled propagation; in fluctuating home trays, manage the sowing for up to 14 days.
  • Spacing: 20 cm apart.
  • Growth Form: Compact and mounded.
  • Height: Approximately 20 cm.
  • Spread: 20–25 cm.
  • Flower Outcome: Extra-large flowers, approximately 9 cm under good conditions.

Garden Uses

Use Matrix Mix for mass planting, borders, edging, window boxes, hanging baskets or containers where its broad colour range can brighten the space.

Growing Notes

  • Sow one raw seed per cell; no soaking or chilling is required.
  • Cover with about 3 mm of fine medium and hold at 18–21°C with even moisture; light is not required before emergence.
  • Move seedlings into bright light and cooler moving air immediately after emergence.
  • Transplant when roots hold the plug and several true leaves have formed, then harden off gradually for 7–10 days.
  • Space plants 20 cm apart and water at soil level; avoid waterlogged crowns, crowding and excess nitrogen.

Food-use note: Treat this product as ornamental unless the supplier confirms the exact lot and production inputs are suitable for edible flowers.
