Onion Red Creole is a short-day Allium cepa onion producing red, flattened-to-round bulbs for fresh use and cooking.

Grow it successfully: Read the exact South African Onion Grow Guide module.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: Annual bulb onion
  • Scientific Name: Allium cepa L.
  • Outcome: Short-day red bulb
  • General Sowing Time: Not year round. Northern districts generally February–April; use the locally matched short-day slot elsewhere.
  • Position: Full sun
  • Seed Form: Raw, unpelleted seed; treatment status is lot-dependent and not confirmed by the sale form
  • Growth Form: Upright hollow leaves and a swelling bulb at soil level; no support or pruning
  • Pretreatment: None; sow dry
  • Sow Depth: 3 mm under the exact stocked label
  • Light: Covered seed does not require light; give bright light after emergence
  • Germination: 7–14 days at a 15–25°C seed-zone target
  • Spacing: 5–8 × 20 cm after thinning; use the wider end for larger bulbs
  • Harvest: Starke Ayres states 90–120 days; the stocked label states 180–240 days. The timing start points are not reconciled, so harvest by top fall and neck condition.
  • Seed Quantity - 5 g raw seed: Approx 1 250 seeds
  • Seed Quantity - 50 g raw seed: Approx 12 500 seeds
  • Seed Quantity - 500 g raw seed: Approx 125 000 seeds

Why Grow This Variety

  • Short-day adaptation suits warm production regions through the cool growing season.
  • Red bulbs add colour and flavour to fresh dishes.
  • The cultivar can be cured for storage when fully mature and sound.
  • The exact module records rather than hides the two published maturity ranges.

Garden Uses

Use Red Creole in salads, salsas, sandwiches, soups, stews, roasted dishes or pickles.

Growing Notes

  • Use the exact stocked 3 mm cover; the separate Starke Ayres packet’s 1 cm depth is recorded as a conflict in the Grow Guide evidence.
  • Keep moisture even and thin early for mature bulbs.
  • Raise in trays or direct-sow; harden transplants before planting at the original depth.
  • Avoid excess late nitrogen and waterlogging.
  • Lift on crop maturity, cure with good airflow and discard damaged bulbs before storage.

Seed safety: “Raw seed” describes the unpelleted sale form, not chemical-treatment status. Do not eat seed or use it for feed or microgreens; follow the physical lot label.
