Mustard Red Giant Seeds produce Brassica juncea ‘Red Giant’, a cool-season leaf mustard with broad green-ribbed leaves that develop burgundy-red to purple colour. Harvest it young for baby leaf or let plants make larger greens for cooking.

Grow it successfully: Read the Mustard Red Giant baby-leaf and mature-greens guide.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: Cool-season annual leafy vegetable
  • Scientific Name: Brassica juncea
  • Cultivar: Red Giant
  • Seed Form: Raw seed; this describes the format and does not prove that a lot is untreated
  • General Sowing Time: Use the regional cool-season windows in the linked guide; the current packet states early spring/autumn
  • Position: Full sun in cool weather; light afternoon shade as conditions warm
  • Sow Depth: 1.5 cm, as stated on the current packet
  • Spacing: Baby leaf 2–3 cm in rows 15–20 cm apart; mature plants 15 cm × 30 cm
  • Germination: 7–14 days; aim for about 13–20°C soil
  • Leaf Harvest: Baby leaves from about 21 days; full-size leaves about 45 days under good conditions. The packet’s 90–100-day figure is a late mature-stage estimate, not the first leaf harvest.
  • Height: Leaf crop up to about 40 cm; a bolting flower stalk grows taller
  • Seed Quantity - 5g raw seed: Approx 3 125 seeds
  • Seed Quantity - 100g raw seed: Approx 62 500 seeds
  • Seed Quantity - 1kg raw seed: Approx 625 000 seeds

Why Grow This Variety

  • Young red-purple leaves add colour and mustard flavour to salads.
  • Larger leaves can be cooked in soups, stews, curries and stir-fries.
  • Staggered short rows provide a longer baby-leaf harvest.
  • The product is treated as the dedicated leaf mustard in the three-product guide.

Growing Notes

  • Direct-sow 1.5 cm deep, keep the seed zone evenly moist and thin at 3–4 true leaves.
  • Keep growth steady; heat and drought make leaves stronger and bring bolting forward.
  • Harvest outside leaves while leaving the crown intact, or cut baby leaf above the growing point.
  • Use only crop-protection products registered for edible mustard and observe the harvest interval.
