Mustard Black Seeds produce Brassica nigra, a pungent dual-purpose mustard for young or mature greens and small dark condiment seed. It is hotter and grows differently from the Red Giant leaf-mustard product.
Grow it successfully: Read the Mustard Black leaf and spice-seed guide.

Why Grow This Species
- Young leaves provide a pronounced mustard bite.
- Larger leaves suit cooked dishes.
- Mature dark seed can be dried for hot mustard and spice use.
- One sowing can be managed for leaves or for seed, but heavy leaf cutting and maximum seed production are different outcomes.
Growing Notes
- Direct-sow 1.5 cm deep and keep the seed zone evenly moist through emergence.
- For seed, stop cutting leaves when the flowering stalk rises and give tall plants wind shelter.
- Cut stalks when most pods are brown and seed is dark and hard, before brittle pods open.
- Do not eat packet seed or use it for jar sprouts; use home-grown spice seed only from a crop managed for edible seed.
