Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: Cool-season baby-leaf spicy salad mix.
  • Scientific Name: Lactuca sativa and assorted spicy salad leaves / herbs.
  • General Sowing Time: All year round in mild conditions, with best flavour and texture in cool seasons; protect from harsh summer heat with light shade and regular watering.
  • Position: Full sun in cool weather; light shade during hot spells.
  • Sow Depth: 5–10 mm
  • Spacing: Sow in rows or broad bands and thin lightly; baby-leaf mixes can be grown closer than heading lettuce.
  • Germination: Best in cool, evenly moist conditions; heat above about 27 °C can inhibit emergence
  • Height: Harvest young as baby leaves.

Why Grow This Variety

  • The spicy baby-leaf mix adds more flavour to fresh salads.
  • Containers, raised beds and kitchen-garden sowings all suit the blend.
  • It supports repeated cut-and-come-again style harvests.
  • The leaves add interest to sandwiches, bowls and garnishes.

Garden Uses

Grow Spicy Salad in containers, shallow rows or broad bands in a prepared bed and harvest the young leaves regularly for salad mixes with extra bite.

Growing Notes

  • Sow shallowly, about 5–10 mm, following the packet directions for raw or pelleted seed.
  • Keep the seedbed cool and evenly moist; high soil temperatures can delay or reduce germination.
  • Use full sun in cool weather and light afternoon shade as temperatures rise.
  • Sow small batches in the variety’s recommended seasonal window for steadier harvests.
  • Harvest young leaves above the crown for possible regrowth.
