Quick Grow Facts
-
Plant Type: Frost-tender perennial; protect the crown from frost and winter wet.
-
Scientific Name: Gerbera jamesonii / cultivated Gerbera hybrid mix.
-
Seed Form: Raw, feathered seed. Raw describes the sale form and does not prove that a lot is untreated.
-
Freshness: Gerbera seed loses viability quickly. Sow promptly after delivery and keep any short-term remainder sealed, cool and dry.
-
Pretreatment: None. Do not soak, scarify or chill.
-
Best Sowing Window: Start under protection from late winter into spring, or use the guide's regional window.
-
Position: Full sun in mild weather; give afternoon shade during extreme heat and protect from frost.
-
Sow Depth and Light: Insert vertically with the pointed seed end in the mix and the feathered end projecting. Use only a fine settling cover and bright ambient light. Do not use the current packet's 1 cm depth.
-
Germination Temperature: 20–25°C.
-
Germination: The packet gives 7–10 days; fresh raw seed may take up to 2–3 weeks. Keep a clean tray for 21 days.
-
Method: Use clean individual cells; outdoor direct sowing is not recommended.
-
Transplanting: Move at two or three true leaves when the root ball holds. Handle by a leaf or plug and keep the crown at or just above soil level.
-
Spacing: About 30 cm.
-
Growth Form: Upright crown-forming rosette with flowering stems to about 50 cm.
-
Pinching: None. Remove fading flower stems at the base.
-
Flowering: Plan about 18–24 weeks in favourable home conditions; cool weather, low light or older seed can extend the timing.
Why Grow This Mix
- The mix produces individual plants with single Gerbera flowers for a varied display.
- Taller stems suit sunny beds, deep containers and small home-cut arrangements.
- Perennial crowns can return where frost, waterlogging and winter-wet crowns are avoided.
- The South African species background suits bright conditions, with regional protection for climate extremes.
Growing Notes
- Orient each raw seed correctly and keep its feathered end visible above the mix.
- Maintain steady warmth and moisture until emergence, then vent the cover and improve airflow.
- Harden seedlings for 7–10 days before planting after frost.
- Use fertile, free-draining soil, water the root zone early in the day and keep the crown dry.
Mix note: The supplier describes a mix of single flowers but publishes no fixed palette or ratio. Do not expect every colour or genetically uniform plants.
Safety: Gerbera is listed as non-toxic to dogs, cats and horses, but it is ornamental, not edible. Do not eat the plant or seed; keep the packet away from children and pets and follow any treatment warning.
