Delphinium Summer Colors Seeds produce profusely branching, compact plants with abundant flowers in a range of colours.

Grow Guide: How to grow Summer Colors delphiniums from seed in South Africa.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: Compact first-year-flowering perennial, often used as a seasonal bedding or container plant
  • Scientific Name: Delphinium grandiflorum
  • Seed Form: Raw seed
  • South African Sowing Time: Sow in a mild window; avoid frost and extreme heat during establishment and flowering
  • Position: Full sun in cool conditions; partial shade in hot districts
  • Sow Depth: Loose 3 mm cover of fine vermiculite; do not use dense potting mix
  • Light: The breeder requires a light cover but does not state a strict light/dark requirement; provide bright light after emergence
  • Germination: Approximately 14–21 days at 20–22°C
  • Prechill: Not required by the current breeder protocol
  • Spacing: Approximately 25 cm
  • Height: Approximately 20–35 cm
  • Flowering Time: Current breeder spring crop time is approximately 16–20 weeks; local timing varies
  • Flower Outcome: Compact, branching mixed-colour display for beds and containers

Why Grow This Variety

  • Compact, branching growth provides colour without taking up much space.
  • The Summer series is early to flower.
  • The compact series flowers in its first year, but extreme heat above approximately 29°C can abort flowers.
  • Plants suit flower beds and containers.

Garden Uses

Use Summer Colors in sunny flower beds or containers where its compact growth form can provide a dense display.

Growing Notes

  • Cover with loose fine vermiculite to the packet's 3 mm depth and maintain 20–22°C.
  • Keep evenly moist through emergence, then provide bright light and airflow.
  • Do not refrigerator-prechill this supplied seed. Pot on after true leaves and harden gradually.
  • Space about 25 cm apart and avoid flowering temperatures above approximately 29°C.
  • All parts, including seed and seedlings, are toxic if swallowed. Keep away from children, pets and livestock and seek prompt medical or veterinary advice after suspected ingestion.
