Delphinium Magic Fountains Mix Seeds produce large, full flower spikes in a varied colour mix above compact foliage.

Grow Guide: How to grow Magic Fountains delphiniums from seed in South Africa.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: Cool-season perennial, often managed for first-year flowers
  • Scientific Name: Delphinium elatum; an older Ball culture sheet uses D. × cultorum
  • Seed Form: Raw seed
  • South African Sowing Time: Late summer to autumn in mild climates; protected late-winter sowing where severe frost is a risk
  • Position: Full sun in cool conditions; morning sun and afternoon protection in hot districts
  • Sow Depth: Loose 3 mm cover of coarse vermiculite; do not use dense potting mix
  • Light: Not required during germination; provide bright light after cotyledon expansion
  • Germination: Packet range 14–21 days at 18–20°C; radicles may appear earlier under controlled conditions
  • Prechill: Not required by the current breeder protocol
  • Spacing: 40–45 cm in a home border; the packet's 25 × 25 cm is a dense display spacing
  • Height: Approximately 75–105 cm depending on environment and production method
  • Flowering Time: Current breeder spring crop time is approximately 18–22 weeks; local timing varies
  • Flower Outcome: Full mixed-colour spikes for beds, borders and cutting

Why Grow This Variety

  • The mix includes blues, purples, pinks and whites.
  • Large, full spikes create a strong vertical display.
  • Compact foliage supports a full grouped planting.
  • The form suits garden beds and borders.

Garden Uses

Use Magic Fountains Mix in sunny beds and borders, either in grouped displays or as part of a layered planting.

Growing Notes

  • Cover with loose coarse vermiculite to the packet's 3 mm depth and maintain 18–20°C.
  • Light is not required during germination; give bright light and airflow as soon as cotyledons open.
  • Do not refrigerator-prechill this supplied seed. Pot on after true leaves and harden gradually.
  • Use 40–45 cm garden spacing, water at soil level and support stems in exposed sites.
  • All parts, including seed and seedlings, are toxic if swallowed. Keep away from children, pets and livestock and seek prompt medical or veterinary advice after suspected ingestion.
