Grow Guide: How to grow Belladonna delphiniums from seed in South Africa.
Quick Grow Facts
-
Plant Type: Cool-season short-lived perennial, often managed as a seasonal cut-flower crop
-
Scientific Name: Delphinium × belladonna
-
Seed Form: Raw seed
-
South African Sowing Time: Late summer to autumn in mild climates; protected late-winter sowing where severe frost is a risk
-
Position: Full sun in cool conditions; morning sun and afternoon protection in hot districts
-
Sow Depth: Cover approximately 1 mm with fine vermiculite or fine seedling mix
-
Light: The packet requires a cover but gives no strict light/dark requirement; provide bright light immediately after emergence
-
Germination: Approximately 10–14 days at 20–22°C
-
Prechill: Not required for this supplied seed
-
Spacing: Packet cut-row spacing 30 × 35 cm; allow about 45 cm in a home border
-
Height: Approximately 75–90 cm; support in exposed sites
-
Flowering Time: Seasonal; plan for the first cool growing cycle and allow local temperature and establishment to shift timing
-
Flower Outcome: Sky-blue branching stems for borders and cutting
Why Grow This Variety
- Sky-blue stems are useful for cut flowers and cottage gardens.
- The crop suits greenhouse, field or garden production.
- Open Belladonna growth adds delicate vertical movement.
- The soft blue colour combines with white, apricot, lavender and pink flowers.
Garden Uses
Grow Delphinium Belladonna Sky Blue in cool-season cutting rows, cottage borders or protected beds for arrangements and vertical colour.
Growing Notes
- Use clean, freely drained seedling mix and a loose 1 mm cover; deeper sowing can reduce emergence.
- Keep at 20–22°C and evenly moist, never saturated; give bright light immediately after emergence.
- Pot on after true leaves, harden gradually and plant at the spacing above.
- Water at soil level, feed moderately and support stems before wind or heavy rain.
- All parts, including seed and seedlings, are toxic if swallowed. Keep away from children, pets and livestock and seek prompt medical or veterinary advice after suspected ingestion.
