Grow tall, dark-green celery with crisp, aromatic stalks for snacks, salads, soups and cooking. Tall Utah is a green-stalk celery type, so healthy green petioles are the normal harvest; blanching is optional.

Ready to grow crisp celery stalks? Follow our step-by-step Celery Grow Guide for shallow sowing, patient germination, transplanting and regional care.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: Cool-season biennial grown as an annual vegetable for its leaf stalks.
  • Scientific Name: Apium graveolens var. dulce
  • Cultivar: Tall Utah; the supplier selection or breeder code is not declared.
  • Growth Form: Upright leafy rosette with overlapping green petioles; stalk celery commonly reaches about 45–60 cm including leaves, but no exact height is verified for this supplier selection. No support or pinching needed.
  • Seed Form: Raw, unpelleted seed. “Raw” does not establish untreated status.
  • Available Pack Sizes: 2 g, 20 g and 100 g raw seed.
  • Best Sowing Window: A long mild period. Use late summer–autumn or late winter–spring in the Western Cape; protected late winter–spring or late summer inland; autumn–winter on the humid coast and in hot subtropical areas.
  • Position: Morning sun or full sun in mild weather; give afternoon shade where temperatures regularly exceed 24°C.
  • Pretreatment: Optional plain-water soak for 12–24 hours, then sow immediately.
  • Sow Depth: Surface sow or cover no more than 1–3 mm. The current 2 g packet says 5 mm; recognised guidance supports a shallower cover for tiny light-sensitive celery seed.
  • Germination Temperature: 20–24°C.
  • Germination: Usually 14–21 days, with uneven emergence possible to 28 days. The current packet’s 7–14 days is an early benchmark.
  • Transplant: Move sturdy plugs with 3–4 true leaves and established roots, usually about 8–10 weeks after sowing; harden gradually without prolonged chilling.
  • Spacing: 20–30 cm between plants and 40–60 cm between rows. Intensive rows can use 15–20 cm; the packet’s 15 × 15 cm needs exact moisture and airflow management.
  • Soil: Deep, fertile, humus-rich soil that drains freely while holding moisture; aim for pH 6.0–6.5.
  • Water: Keep the shallow root zone consistently moist. Drought or sudden moisture swings make stalks stringy and can contribute to blackheart.
  • Feeding: Work in compost and use regular modest balanced feeding according to a soil test or edible-crop fertiliser label; avoid heavy, imbalanced doses.
  • Harvest: Use the packet’s 85–90 days as an early check, but allow roughly 3–4 months after transplanting and harvest when stalks are full and crisp.

Why Grow Tall Utah Celery

  • Produces dense plants with overlapping green stalks and a well-filled heart.
  • Fresh stalks give crunch and aromatic celery flavour to raw and cooked dishes.
  • Outer stalks can be picked individually while the central heart continues growing.
  • Optional light exclusion can produce a paler, milder heart without changing the naturally green type.

Growing Notes

  • Pre-moisten the seed mix, press the dust-fine seed onto the surface and barely cover it.
  • Keep trays at 20–24°C in bright, diffuse light and never allow the surface to dry.
  • Prefer trays or cells; direct sowing needs a long mild season, mist irrigation and excellent weed control.
  • Transplant at the original depth, keep soil out of the heart and water immediately.
  • Use afternoon shade, mulch and reliable irrigation where heat threatens stalk quality.
  • Blanching is optional. Once plants reach about 25–30 cm, exclude light around the stalks only; keep leaves and the heart open.
