Want a cayenne-style chilli for curries, sauces and home-dried seasoning? Rajah is a hot pepper with elongated fruit suited to fresh cooking or drying. Grow it in sun and pick as the fruit reaches the colour and heat you prefer.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Crop: Rajah hybrid chilli, Capsicum annuum.
  • Growth form: Upright, branching fruiting plant; support loaded stems if they lean.
  • Sow: Start about 6 mm deep in protected, free-draining mix. Keep it warm, around 27–32 °C for general pepper propagation, and evenly moist.
  • Plant out: Harden off, then transplant to sun after frost risk passes and the soil warms.
  • Space: About 40–50 cm between plants, with enough room for airflow and picking.
  • Harvest: Snip firm fruit for fresh cooking, or allow it to ripen fully before drying and grinding.

Use fertile, well-drained soil, water steadily during fruit set and avoid heavy nitrogen. Dry fruit thoroughly with a food-safe method before storing it as spice. Wear gloves for hot fruit and wash hands and tools. Sowing seed is for planting, not eating or sprouting. Brought to you by Ubuntuberg Seeds.
