Quick Grow Facts

Long Island at a glance

Crop: Brassica oleracea (Gemmifera Group) ‘Long Island’; a leafy, upright vegetable grown for the buds along its stem.

Seed: raw; 5 g and 100 g packs. Raw describes seed form, not treatment or food-grade status.

Sow and establish

Depth: 5 mm, covered with fine seedling mix. Keep evenly moist, never saturated.

Germination: allow 7–14 days at 15–20°C under suitable conditions. Give seedlings bright light after emergence.

Transplant: 4–6 true leaves and a well-rooted plug; harden off gradually first.

Space and support

Supplier spacing: 40 cm between plants × 65 cm between rows.

More garden room: about 60 cm between plants, retaining at least 65 cm between rows, gives a broader canopy room and airflow.

Size: supplier height about 80 cm; the RHS Long Island profile gives 0.5–1 m height and spread. Stake if wind rocks the stem.

Plan a cool finish

Position: full sun, fertile soil with drainage and steady moisture.

Season: a long growing period with cooler conditions as sprouts develop; district conditions matter more than a national calendar.

Harvest: supplier estimate 100–130 days, with the starting point unspecified. Pick firm, compact buds from the bottom upward; dates are not a guarantee.

Why Grow Long Island

This heirloom Brussels sprout forms edible buds along a sturdy leafy stem. Allow room for its canopy and use a stake if an exposed site causes rocking; compact growth is not a no-staking guarantee.

Growing Notes

Sow in modules or a prepared bed, then thin to one plant per position. Harden off before transplanting. The packet lists autumn and early spring, but choose a long enough local growing window for a cool finish. Keep soil evenly moist with good drainage and watch for caterpillars and aphids.

Harvest firm, tightly closed buds from the bottom upward. The supplier’s 100–130-day estimate does not specify sowing or transplanting as its starting point. Raw seed is not proof of untreated or food-grade status; do not eat sowing seed or use it for sprouts or microgreens. Follow the current packet’s handling warnings.
