Aquilegia F1 Earlybird Blue White Seeds produce white inner petals framed by larger blue outer petals on compact perennial plants. Earlybird F1 is a first-year-flowering Aquilegia × hybrida series with a low plant-stage cold requirement for warm-winter production; it still performs best in cool conditions.

Grow it successfully: Read the Aquilegia (Columbine) Grow Guide.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: Compact herbaceous perennial; first-year-flowering F1 series under the correct cool programme
  • Scientific Name: Aquilegia × hybrida
  • Series: Earlybird F1
  • Seed Form: Raw seed
  • General Sowing Time: Use a cool regional window; see the linked South African guide
  • Position: Morning sun to partial shade; full sun only in reliably cool, moist conditions
  • Sow Depth: Press onto moist mix; leave uncovered or apply only a fine dusting up to about 1 mm
  • Germination: 22–25°C; breeder 7–17 days from 50% to maximum germination, with 14–21 days allowed for home trays
  • Pretreatment: No routine seed chilling or soaking; after 5–6 true leaves, give plants about four weeks at 10–13°C for timely flowering
  • Spacing: 25–30 cm
  • Height: 23–28 cm
  • Spread: 20–25 cm
  • Flower Outcome: Blue-and-white flowers on short stems from early spring into summer in suitable cool conditions

Why Grow This Variety

  • White inner petals framed by larger blue outer petals create a distinctive garden display.
  • The compact 23–28 cm growth form suits borders and containers.
  • Morning sun or partial shade makes the series useful for dappled-light positions.
  • Its low plant-stage cold requirement supports first-year flowering in a well-timed South African cool-season programme.

Garden Uses

Use Earlybird Blue White in cool-season containers, cottage borders or dappled beds protected from hot afternoon sun.

Growing Notes

  • Do not bury the raw seed 5 mm or put the seed tray in a refrigerator.
  • Keep the shallow sowing evenly moist at 22–25°C, then provide bright filtered light and cooler growing conditions after emergence.
  • Transplant without burying the crown and space plants 25–30 cm apart.
  • Aquilegia is ornamental and not edible; keep seed and plant material away from children and pets.
