Want a long red chilli for fresh cooking or preserving? Hot Portugal is grown for elongated fruit that can be used green or left to ripen red. Its heat can vary, so taste a tiny cooked amount before adding more to a dish.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Crop: Hot Portugal, a hot Capsicum annuum pepper type.
  • Growth form: Upright, branching fruiting plant; support stems if fruit or wind makes them lean.
  • Sow: Start about 6 mm deep in protected, freely draining seed mix. Keep the root zone warm, around 27–32 °C for general pepper propagation, and evenly moist.
  • Plant out: Harden off before planting in full sun after frost risk passes and the soil warms.
  • Space: Roughly 45–60 cm between plants with room for airflow.
  • Harvest: Snip elongated fruit green for a fresher flavour or leave it to turn red for a riper one. Check fruit regularly and cut it cleanly from the plant.

Care and Kitchen Use

Grow in fertile, freely drained soil and keep watering even during flower and fruit set. Mulch warm soil and avoid repeated waterlogging or excessive nitrogen. Use fruit fresh, roasted, pickled or dried where food-safe handling and your preferred heat level allow.

Chilli safety: Wear gloves for hot fruit, keep hands away from eyes, and wash hands and tools afterwards. Ventilate when cooking or drying chillies. Keep sowing seed out of food and away from children and pets.
