Bermuda Grass Lawn Seeds produce fine, creeping Cynodon dactylon turf for hot, sunny lawn areas. This lawn is also known as Cape Royal.

Ready for a hard-wearing sunny lawn? Follow our step-by-step Lawn Seed Establishment Guide for sowing, germination and care advice.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: Perennial warm-season lawn grass
  • Scientific Name: Cynodon dactylon
  • Common Name: Cape Royal
  • General Sowing Time: Warm spring to summer; early autumn only where establishment can finish before cold
  • Position: Full sun; does not tolerate shade
  • Sow Depth: Cover shallowly as directed for your chosen product, then press for firm seed-to-soil contact
  • Sowing Rate: Measure the area in square metres and use the rate stated for your chosen product; rates differ between lawn types and seed forms
  • Temperature: Sow during active warm growth after frost risk has passed; keep the seedbed evenly moist
  • Establishment: Emergence and full coverage are separate stages; allow seedlings to root and the lawn to fill in before regular use
  • Growth Form: Creeping through rhizomes and stolons

Why Grow This Lawn

  • Heat and drought tolerance suit sunny South African sites once the lawn is rooted.
  • Creeping growth produces a hard-wearing surface and repairs gaps during active growth.
  • The established lawn tolerates gradual close mowing on a level surface.
  • Well-drained sandy soil is suitable; waterlogged shade is not.

Growing Notes

  • Prepare a fine, firm, weed-free seedbed and spread half the seed in each of two crossing passes.
  • Keep the upper surface evenly moist without puddles until broad emergence, then water deeper and less often.
  • Delay mowing until seedlings resist a gentle tug. Use a sharp blade and remove no more than one third at a time.
  • Expect yellowing or dormancy in frost-prone winters; growth resumes with spring warmth.
