Want to grow a superhot chilli for carefully measured sauces? Carolina Reaper is known for wrinkled red fruit, often with a pointed tail, and intense heat. Give it a long, warm season and a secure position away from curious children and pets.

Ready to raise your Carolina Reaper from seed? Follow our Pepper and Chilli Grow Guide for warm sowing, hardening off, regional timing and fruiting care.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Crop: Carolina Reaper, a superhot Capsicum chinense chilli.
  • Growth form: Upright, branching fruiting plant; support stems if they become heavily laden.
  • Sow: Start in protected trays about 6 mm deep in fine, freely draining mix. Keep the root zone warm, around 27–32 °C for general pepper propagation, and evenly moist, not saturated.
  • Plant out: Harden off and transplant into sun only after frost risk has passed and nights and soil are warm.
  • Space: Allow generous room, roughly 60–80 cm between plants, and adjust for airflow and actual growth.
  • Harvest: Snip fully coloured red fruit when firm. Check plants regularly through warm weather; allow slow-ripening fruit more time rather than pulling it from the branch.

Care and Use

Grow in fertile, well-drained soil. Water the root zone deeply when needed, mulch after soil warms, and avoid heavy nitrogen feeding that favours leaves over fruit. If flowers drop in extreme heat or cold, stabilise watering and wait for milder conditions. Use harvested fruit only in very small amounts; keep it out of reach of children and pets.

Superhot safety: Wear gloves when handling seed and fruit, avoid touching your face and eyes, and wash hands and tools afterwards. Ventilate well when cooking or drying fruit; capsaicin can irritate skin, eyes and airways. Do not eat sowing seed.
