Want a crisp, hot chilli for fresh salsa or cooked sauces? Serrano produces slender fruit that is commonly used green and can also be left to ripen red. Pick a small amount first to judge the heat of your harvest.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Crop: Serrano-type hot chilli, Capsicum annuum.
  • Growth form: Upright, branching fruiting plant; support loaded stems if needed.
  • Sow: Start about 6 mm deep in protected, free-draining mix. Keep it warm, around 27–32 °C for general pepper propagation, and evenly moist.
  • Plant out: Harden off and move into sun after frost risk passes and soil warms.
  • Space: About 40–50 cm between plants, widening for airflow where summers are humid.
  • Harvest: Cut firm green fruit for salsa or let it ripen red before using in sauces.

Grow in fertile, well-drained soil and water steadily during fruit set. Wash fruit before use. Wear gloves if hot fruit irritates your skin, avoid touching your eyes, and wash hands and tools. Sowing seed is for planting, not eating or sprouting. Brought to you by Ubuntuberg Seeds.
