Want to grow Bishop’s Crown chillies from seed? Start in a warm, bright place, then grow young plants on in a sunny, freely drained spot after frost risk has passed. Give them steady moisture and enough room for air to move around the foliage.

Ready to raise your own chillies from seed? Follow our Pepper and Chilli Grow Guide for warm sowing, seedling care, South African regional timing and safe chilli handling.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Crop group: Capsicum chilli. Check the plants you grow for their actual fruit form and heat; neither follows reliably from the name alone.
  • Season: start under warmth and move outside only after frost risk has passed and the soil has warmed.
  • Sowing: cover seed about 6 mm deep in clean, free-draining seed mix. Keep the mix warm and evenly moist, not saturated.
  • Seedlings: give strong light after emergence, pot on when true leaves develop and harden off gradually before planting out.
  • Position and care: full sun, freely draining soil and steady root-zone moisture. As general garden guidance, allow around 30–60 cm between plants, adjusting for actual mature growth and airflow.
  • Harvest: pick sound fruit at the stage you need with clean snips. Wear gloves when handling hot chillies and avoid touching your eyes or face.

If growth stalls, check warmth, light, drainage and moisture first. Inspect pests or disease before choosing any registered treatment.
