Kohlrabi Purple Vienna is a cool-season annual brassica with purple skin and crisp, mild flesh for raw or cooked dishes.

Quick Grow Facts

  • Plant Type: Cool-season brassica vegetable, usually grown as an annual.
  • Scientific Name: Brassica oleracea Gongylodes Group
  • General Sowing Time: Best in cool South African windows from late summer through autumn and again in early spring; source copy also positions it for spring and summer, but protect plants from heat stress in warm regions.
  • Position: Full sun in cool weather; light afternoon shade can help during warm spells.
  • Sow Depth: 6-12 mm deep.
  • Spacing: 10-15 cm apart for standard bulbs, with rows around 30 cm apart.
  • Germination: Keep seedbeds evenly moist during emergence.
  • Height: Low, upright brassica; allow about 30-50 cm of garden height/space and harvest bulbs at 5-8 cm while tender.

Why Grow This Variety

  • Purple colour adds visual interest to the vegetable garden.
  • Crisp, mild flesh can be used raw or cooked.
  • The compact crop suits beds, rows and larger containers.
  • Leaves can be cooked like other brassica greens.

Garden Uses

Grow Kohlrabi Purple Vienna in a sunny, compost-improved vegetable bed or container, then use the swollen stems in salads, slaws, stir-fries, soups or roasts.

Growing Notes

  • Water regularly so growth stays steady and bulbs do not become fibrous.
  • Avoid following cabbage, broccoli, kale, cauliflower or other brassicas in the same bed.
  • Thin seedlings early so each plant can form a clean swollen stem.
  • Harvest stems at about 5-8 cm for the best texture and mild flavour.
