- Spacing: 10-15 cm apart for standard bulbs, with rows around 30 cm apart.
- Germination: Keep seedbeds evenly moist during emergence.
- Height: Low, upright brassica; allow about 30-50 cm of garden height/space and harvest bulbs at 5-8 cm while tender.
- Available Pack Sizes: 5 g raw seed, 50 g raw seed
- Harvest: Harvest when swollen stems are about 5-8 cm across, before they become woody.
Why Grow Kohlrabi Purple Vienna?
- Purple colour adds bold visual appeal to the vegetable garden.
- Crisp, mild flesh is useful raw or cooked.
- Compact crop for beds, rows and larger containers.
- Leaves can also be cooked like other brassica greens.
- Best quality comes from fast, even growth without heat or moisture stress.
Garden & Kitchen Uses
Plant Kohlrabi Purple Vienna in a sunny, compost-improved vegetable bed or container. Use the swollen stems raw in salads and slaws, or cook them in stir-fries, soups, roasts and mixed vegetable dishes.
Growing Notes
- Keep growth steady with regular watering; dry spells can make bulbs fibrous.
- Avoid planting after cabbage, broccoli, kale, cauliflower or other brassicas in the same bed.
- Thin seedlings early so each plant has room to form a clean swollen stem.
- Harvest young for the best texture and mild flavour.
- Watch young brassicas for chewing pests and protect seedlings where needed.
