How to Grow Waterblommetjies in South Africa

Want fragrant white flowers floating over a cool-season pond? Waterblommetjies, Aponogeton distachyos, are aquatic rhizome plants—not border bulbs. Their oval leaves float on the water while forked flower spikes rise above it through winter and spring. Give them a loam-filled pot, clean still water and room for a summer rest.

Quick Grow Facts

Growth form
Aquatic rhizomatous perennial with floating leaves and scented flower spikes.
Position
Sun for the best flowering; shelter pond water from strong wind.
Planting medium
Loam in an aquatic pot or basket, not ordinary dry potting mix.
Water depth
Start in shallow water, then move the pot gradually deeper after strong growth.
Season
Autumn growth, winter/spring flowering and a natural summer dormancy.
Habit
Vigorous and self-seeding; monitor a small pond so it does not crowd other plants.

Plant as a pond rhizome, not a dry bulb

Choose a pond, lined water garden or large watertight container with still or slow water. Fill an aquatic basket or broad pot with loam, settle the rhizome into the surface and cover gently so it is stable. Set the pot in shallow water first. Once leaves are growing strongly, move it gradually deeper rather than dropping a new plant straight into deep water. This gives roots time to anchor and leaves time to reach the surface.

Do not use a standard patio pot without a water reservoir: the growing medium must remain submerged. Direct planting into the pond’s loamy base also works where the plant can be contained and lifted later. Avoid water contaminated by runoff, algicides or other treatments. The final position needs to let leaves reach the surface. Start shallow and deepen progressively only once the plant is growing strongly.

Cool-season growth and summer rest

Waterblommetjies begin active growth as autumn water returns and flower profusely through winter and spring. Keep the pond level stable while plants are growing, top up with suitable water during dry spells, and remove fallen leaves or decaying debris that smother new shoots. Do not fertilise casually in a small pond: excess nutrient can feed algae instead of the plant. If growth is pale or weak, first check sun, water quality and whether the pot has become crowded.

As summer heat and drying conditions arrive, foliage naturally dies back and the rhizome rests. This is not a failure and does not need a forced rebloom. In a seasonal pond, let the pot dry only after foliage has completed its cycle, then keep the dormant rhizome in barely damp loam out of baking heat until autumn conditions return. In a permanent pond, it may remain in place if the water and pot remain suitable. Divide a congested clump during the quiet summer period and replant promptly.

South African seasonal care

Winter-rainfall Western Cape
This is its natural rhythm: autumn water triggers growth and cool winter/spring conditions bring flowers. Give sun and manage vigorous seedlings.
Frost-prone interior
Use a deep protected container or pond and protect the rhizome from a hard freeze. Allow a dry summer rest only after foliage dies back.
Humid coast and KZN Midlands
Use a clean, sunlit pond and watch for algae or crowding. Seasonal timing may vary, so let foliage and water temperature guide care.
Hot, dry or subtropical interior
Keep active plants from overheating, maintain pond level and provide some afternoon relief in extreme heat. Expect a stronger summer rest.

Troubleshooting Waterblommetjies

Rhizome does not grow
Check that it is in loam and shallow water, not dry soil or sudden deep water. A quiet summer rest can also be normal.
Leaves fail to reach the surface
Lower the pot to shallower water temporarily and confirm the root medium is not compacted or depleted.
Pond becomes crowded
Lift excess seedlings or divide a clump during summer dormancy, leaving room for water movement and other aquatic plants.

Food-safety boundary: Waterblommetjies flowers and buds have a traditional culinary use, but planting stock and pond-grown flowers should not automatically be assumed safe to eat. Do not consume supplied tubers or cook home-grown flowers unless food suitability, treatment restrictions and clean growing water have been confirmed.
