Sow whole pellets, gently

Use clean, fine seed compost in cells or a shallow tray. Press each pellet onto the damp surface so it has contact, but leave it uncovered; mist carefully so the clay softens without washing it away. Keep the medium consistently moist, never stagnant, with bright light and warmth. These are ornamental seeds: do not eat them or use them for sprouts. Give germination warmth and air

A clear cover can conserve moisture initially, but vent it daily and remove it once shoots emerge. Cool, dark or repeatedly dry media slows emergence; saturated mix and poor airflow can rot pellets or cause damping-off. Do not split a pellet to make more plants—the mix is formulated as a unit.

Move sturdy plugs without crowding

Pot on when roots hold the plug together and shoots are growing strongly. Harden off for a week, beginning in bright shade, then plant into moisture-retentive soil or a roomy container. Set plants 30–36 cm apart; where the aim is a single mixed architectural clump, do not thin the component species apart.

Choose sun with dependable moisture

Give morning sun or full sun where water is reliable; provide afternoon shelter in very hot interiors. Improve ordinary soil with compost and mulch, but do not create a dry, free-draining rock garden. Juncus is happiest in consistently moist ground and is useful beside, not deeply under, a water feature.

Care for the mixed clump

Water deeply whenever the root zone begins to dry; containers need especially regular checks. Feed lightly with a balanced fertiliser during active growth. Cut out brown or winter-damaged stems in late winter or early spring, keeping new shoots intact. Do not pinch the rushes: their contrasting straight and curly stems are the feature.

Troubleshooting

No shoots

The pellet may have dried, been covered too deeply, lacked warmth or rotted in soggy compost. Start again with fresh medium, surface sowing, bright light and even moisture.

Seedlings collapse

Check for cold, stagnant wet mix and crowding. Improve drainage and ventilation, discard collapsed seedlings and disinfect trays before resowing.

Plants brown at the tips

Check the root ball: hot wind, a drying pot or salt build-up can stress rushes. Re-wet thoroughly, mulch and flush containers occasionally.

One form outgrows the other

This is normal for a multi-species pellet. Keep the whole clump well watered rather than separating the plants.

What to expect

Blue-green upright stems and green corkscrew stems create a perennial mixed display for large containers and moist garden edges.
