How to Grow Campanula from Seed in South Africa
This guide covers exactly four GARDENING.co.za products: Campana Deep Blue, Lilac, New White and Pink. All four are pelleted Campanula medium Campana F1 cut-flower selections. It does not cover compact Campanella pot campanula, perennial Campanula carpatica, or unnamed Canterbury-bell seed.
Campana is bred for first-season professional cut-flower production and is sold locally as a cool-season annual. The species is often described as biennial, but that generic description must not replace the exact Campana programme below.

Why This Guide Says “Do Not Cover”
The four current GARDENING.co.za packet-label images say “Deep: 2mm”, while PanAmerican Seed's exact Campana F1 propagation table specifies no cover and light for germination. Because the labels are retailer-created media rather than lot-specific breeder culture, and the Lilac label also carries a copied White SKU, this guide follows the exact breeder rule: surface-sow and do not cover.
A very light dusting can still block light or dry unevenly over a pellet. Press the pellet into firm contact with pre-moistened mix and leave it visible. Pelleting makes fine seed easier to place; it does not change a light-germinating seed into a seed that should be buried.
How to Sow Pelleted Campana Seed
- Fill clean cells with fine, disease-free, free-draining seedling mix. A mildly acidic mix around pH 5.8–6.5 suits the breeder plug programme.
- Moisten the whole cell and let excess water drain before sowing.
- Place one pellet on the surface of each cell. Press gently for contact, but do not bury or cover it.
- Mist until the pellet is fully and evenly wet. Hold the medium at 20–22°C in light.
- Keep the surface moist through radicle emergence without closing the air spaces in the mix. A dry pellet may not dissolve; a saturated cell encourages damping-off.
- Expect the breeder's 4–5-day germination benchmark in controlled conditions. Home emergence may take the label's 7–10 days; do not add heat or bury the remaining pellets.
- After emergence, provide strong light and airflow. Move established seedlings towards 16–18°C rather than holding them warm.
No chilling, soaking or other seed pretreatment is required. Do not soak pellets before sowing.
Transplanting, Spacing and Support
Campana uses a 7–8-week plug programme. Transplant when the roots hold the plug together and the seedling is sturdy; do not leave finished plugs crowded in their cells. Water before lifting, handle the root ball rather than the stem and keep the crown at the same level after planting. Harden plants gradually over 5–7 days by increasing light and air movement while protecting them from hard frost, hot wind and driving rain.
For straight single stems, plant 10–13 cm apart in a cut row and install horizontal support netting early. For a home border where air movement matters more than maximum stem count, allow about 20–25 cm. The current 30–40 cm packet spacing is not the breeder's cut-flower density.
Do not pinch plants intended for premium single stems. The exact culture guide says pinching delays flowering by about two weeks and produces several shorter, lower-quality stems.
When to Establish Campana in South Africa
Campana is a cool-growing, daylength-responsive crop. The breeder programme first builds vegetative growth under short days, then uses long days for flower initiation and finishing. Commercial schedules may use blackout cloth or daylength extension; a home garden cannot assume identical timing. The windows below are practical starting points, not a national flowering guarantee.
Winter-rainfall Western Cape
Start protected trays from late summer into early autumn, when 20–22°C germination can be followed by cooler 16–18°C seedling growth. Plant into a raised, freely drained bed during autumn, before prolonged winter saturation. Natural lengthening days from midwinter into spring favour the finishing phase, but wet roots, strong fronts and sudden spring heat can reduce stem quality.
Frost-prone interior
Start in late summer to early autumn under protection and keep plugs sheltered from hard freezes. Establish rooted plants in a bright bed only where frost cloth, a tunnel or another protective structure is available. In very severe frost districts, a protected late-winter sowing is safer, but rapidly lengthening days can shorten the vegetative phase and produce shorter stems.
Humid coast and KZN Midlands
Use the coolest practical autumn-to-winter window. Germinate under bright rain shelter, then plant into an airy raised bed with morning sun and light afternoon protection. Avoid the combination of warm nights, saturated mix and wet foliage; it raises the risk of damping-off, downy mildew and weak stems.
Hot-dry or subtropical interior
Start only in the coolest part of the year, commonly from mid-autumn into winter, and only where the seedling area can be cooled after emergence. Give morning sun, shelter from hot wind and light afternoon protection. Keep the root zone evenly moist, but do not compensate for dry air by waterlogging the bed. Expect natural timing and stem length to vary more than in a controlled cool tunnel.
Care After Planting
- Temperature: Aim for days around 16–21°C and nights around 13–16°C during finishing. The crop may survive warmer spells, but warm germination and persistently hot nights are not the target programme.
- Light: Use the brightest position that stays reasonably cool. Strong light supports sturdy growth; harsh hot-afternoon exposure can bleach flowers and stress roots.
- Water: Maintain medium moisture. Dry stress causes early flowering and short stems, while overwatering produces weak roots and stems that fall over.
- Soil: Use fertile, well-drained soil, ideally around pH 5.5–6.5. Raised beds are safer where winter rain or heavy soil is a problem.
- Feeding: Begin with weak balanced nutrition after seedlings establish, then feed steadily but moderately after transplanting. Avoid strong fertiliser on young roots and excessive nitrogen that creates soft growth.
- Airflow: Keep foliage dry by night, remove dead tissue and avoid crowding in humid districts.
- Pests and disease: Watch for aphids, thrips and leaf miners, plus Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, rust, Ramularia and downy mildew. Remove badly affected material and use only controls registered for the crop and region, exactly as labelled.
Flowering and Cutting
The current breeder product pages specify a 7–8-week plug stage followed by about 10–14 weeks to finish; use roughly 17–22 weeks from sowing as the managed-crop planning range. A newer finishing table gives 8–12 weeks after transplant in tightly controlled greenhouse conditions. Heat, daylength, delayed transplanting and water stress can move the result outside either range.
Install support before stems lean. Harvest when the first bells on a stem are open and well coloured while upper buds remain firm. Cut in the cool part of the day with clean tools and move stems into clean water immediately. Removing spent stems keeps the bed tidy, but the exact Campana crop is primarily programmed for a concentrated cut-flower harvest.
Why Germination or Establishment Fails
- No germination: pellets were buried, the tray was kept dark, the surface dried or the medium was outside 20–22°C.
- Pellet remains hard: the coating was never fully and evenly wetted. Mist gently without flooding the cell.
- Seedlings collapse: dirty trays, stagnant humidity or saturated airless mix encouraged damping-off.
- Seedlings stretch: light was delayed after emergence or the crop stayed too warm.
- Transplants stall: plugs were held too long, roots were torn, crowns were buried or plants were not hardened.
- Short stems and early flowers: plugs did not receive enough vegetative time, the crop dried, days lengthened too early or temperatures were too high.
- Plants fall over: overwatering weakened roots and stems, spacing was too wide for the support plan, or netting was installed too late.
- Leaf spots, rust or mildew: foliage stayed wet, air movement was poor or infected debris remained in the bed.
Safety and Scope Boundary
These products are sold as ornamental pelleted seed. The current packet-label media does not declare whether the coating contains a treatment. Do not eat seed, do not use the crop as a food plant and keep pellets away from children and pets. Wash hands after sowing. “Pelleted” describes the seed form; it is not proof that seed is either treated or untreated.
