Purple Babiana flowers on short spikes above pleated green leaves in a sunny rock garden

How to Grow Babiana in South Africa

How to Grow Babiana in South Africa

Grow Babiana for a bright, fragrant spring display by treating it as a winter-growing, summer-dormant corm. Babiana has ribbed, narrow leaves and funnel-shaped flowers held on short spikes. It is at home in a sunny rockery, raised sandy bed or deep pot where you can give it water in growth and a dry rest in summer.

Position

Full sun and rich, sandy, well-drained soil.

Plant

Plant firm corms point-up in autumn, with about 8 cm of soil above the corms and about 5 cm between them.

Season

Grow and water through the cool season; dry off after leaves fade in summer.

Planting and establishment

Plant firm corms as autumn temperatures ease, point up, in a sunny position. Cover them with about 8 cm of well-drained sandy loam and space them about 5 cm apart for a clump display. Work mature compost into poor soil, but do not make the planting pocket water-retentive. Water once after planting and keep the soil evenly moist during active leaf growth; corms tolerate some dryness better than saturation.

Babiana is a corm, not a true bulb. A corm is an underground storage stem, so protect its drainage and avoid repeatedly disturbing it while leaves are green. Flowering is generally in spring, but local rain and temperature change the exact date.

Containers and ongoing care

Use a deep pot with clear drainage holes and a sandy, gritty mix with a little mature compost. Plant in groups for impact, retaining the same depth rule. Keep the pot in direct sun and water during the cool growing period when the mix begins to dry. A weak balanced feed during active growth can help a container crop; do not feed a dry or dormant corm.

After flowers fade, retain the leaves until they yellow. Then stop routine watering and keep the corms dry through summer dormancy. Lift offsets or divide a congested clump only while dormant, then replant in autumn.

Care in four South African regions

Winter-rainfall Western Cape

Grow through cool rain, but use a raised, fast-draining bed or sheltered pot so corms never sit wet.

Frost-prone interior

Use a protected pot or sheltered sunny wall. Cover emerging growth for a damaging hard frost and keep drainage open.

Humid coast and KZN Midlands

Use full sun, spacing and a gritty pot or raised bed. Avoid wet foliage late in the day and prolonged wet soil.

Hot, dry and subtropical interior

Grow in the coolest suitable season and give active plants enough water to prevent premature dormancy. Keep the resting corms dry.

Troubleshooting

Soft corms or no growth

Discard soft corms. Correct poor drainage or overwatering before replanting sound stock.

Leaves fade before flowers

Active growth may have dried too hard. Water deeply when the growing mix is drying, then allow a true dry rest only after leaves yellow.

Stunted or damaged growth

Inspect corms for thrips or mealybugs and leaves for red spider mite. Remove badly affected material and improve airflow.

Safety

Babiana is ornamental planting stock. Do not eat corms or foliage, and keep them away from children and pets.
